IB Class of 2023 results

From the Principal

On behalf of the Canberra Girls Grammar School community, I am pleased to congratulate the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) students of the Year 12 Class of 2023, who received their IB scores and ATAR equivalences last week.

As mentioned in our statement of BSSS results in December, the entire Class of 2023 should be commended for their leadership of the School over the course of the year. They have demonstrated compassion and kindness, a strong sense of service and embraced the values of the School, including championing the newest of the School’s values—Respect.

Over the past two years, IBDP students have demonstrated the epitome of the characteristics of global citizenship. IB learners develop critical thinking skills and engage in Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) as caring young people who create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The level of academic achievement evidenced in the 2023 IBDP results only further attests to the critical and creative skills of these fine young women.

In the IBDP, students undertake six academic subjects from five curriculum areas, and results are awarded on a seven-point scale with up to three additional points awarded for performance in the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, totalling a maximum of 45 points. All students in the CGGS 2023 cohort achieved the Diploma and did exceptionally well in the core components of the programme with three students achieving high A grades and one student achieving full marks (10/10) for her TOK essay, which is a very rare occurrence.

We are very pleased to recognise the outstanding contributions of our IBDP students in 2023 which include the following achievements:

  • 17% of students achieved an ATAR equivalence of 95 or higher, placing them in the top 5% of their age cohort in the NSW and ACT.
  • 50% of students achieved an ATAR equivalence of 90 or higher, placing them in the top 10% of their age cohort in the NSW and ACT.
  • 83% of students achieved an ATAR equivalence of 80 or higher placing them in the top 20% of their age cohort in the NSW and ACT.
  • The median IB score for the 2023 IBDP cohort at CGGS is 35.13 (equivalent to a 90.80 ATAR).

Combined with the BSSS results, the CGGS Class of 2023 achieved the following:

  • 9.8% of students achieved an ATAR of 99 or higher. This is the highest percentage of students achieving a score above 99 in the last 13 years.
  • 14.6% of students achieved an ATAR of 98 or higher. This is the highest percentage of students achieving a score above 98 in the last 10 years.
  • 18.2% of students achieved an ATAR of 95 or higher, placing them in the top 5% of their age cohort in the NSW and ACT.
  • 35.2% of students achieved an ATAR of 90 or higher, placing them in the top 10% of their age cohort in the NSW and ACT.
  • 57% of students achieved an ATAR of 80 or higher, qualifying them for entrance to the top universities in Australia.
  • The combined IB/BSSS median ATAR for the Class of 2023 was 83.68.

We resoundingly congratulate and applaud the fine young people of the Class of 2023 and thank them for the contributions they have made to our community, and wish them all the very best for their future endeavours. We also acknowledge and thank the many teachers and staff who have supported the Class of 2023 through their journey at the School.

Kind regards

Terrie Jones
Principal
