Welcome from the Principal

Welcome to Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS) and thank you for taking the time to learn more about our amazing school. Based in the heart of Canberra and directly down the road from Parliament House, we have been educating children and young women for almost 100 years. As a significant part of Canberra’s history and an outstanding contributor to Canberra’s educational landscape, I invite you to explore this site to find out more about us. You and your daughter, or son in the early years, are most welcome at CGGS.

From our youngest students in the ELC right through to the graduating Year 12 girls, we foster curiosity and a love of learning. Our students are engaged in their own development journey through challenge, reflection, and ownership. They are able to follow their own path and explore the world they wish to create for themselves. It is a great joy to witness our young people follow their passions, or find their passion, as the skilled and dedicated teachers of CGGS lead them through their learning.

Our students are part of the CGGS family from the moment they walk onto our campuses. Welcomed into a House group that becomes part of their CGGS identity, where House spirit is clearly on show and the House competitions are incredible spectacles. Ably led by student leaders and committed staff, these competitions leave the spectators and students energised, wowed and in admiration of the student’s abilities. In the years that follow their graduation one of the first questions alumni ask each other is which House were you in?

In our ELC and Junior School, our IB PYP and later, the IB MYP establish an exceptional foundation for the boys and girls of ELC to Year 3, and girls from Year 4 onwards. They play, explore, question, debate, discuss and explore hands-on learning for deep conceptual understanding. I am in awe of the individual projects created by the Year 5 students at the end of year IB PYP Exhibition, these are young girls with big ideas and big plans. In the Senior School, our all-girls education is dedicated to preparing girls and young women for a life of independence and choice; where they are the drivers of their future and we are the facilitators of their success. It is a pleasure to share this with them. To see young women with every opportunity for their future, and who are intelligent, globally-minded future leaders gives all of us at CGGS enormous pride.

Our school is a special place with a diverse student body, there are over 50 nationalities represented and more than 50 languages spoken at home by our families. We welcome international students and students from regional Australia into our Boarding House, where they experience a home away from home and create a unique family of their own in the house. Defence families find the transition into our school easy and well-supported, because we are well versed in welcoming families at various points during the school year.

I hope to welcome you to CGGS in the near future where you and your child/ren can see that to the young, anything is possible.
