Student News - Term 2 Week 3 2023

Congratulations to Sophia (Y12) who has been selected to represent Australia at the 2023 Asian Physics Olympiad in Mongolia. Sophia has been preparing for this competition for close to 12 months, having initially sat the Australian Science Olympiad Exam in July 2022. Her performance in the exam secured her a spot at the Australian Science Olympiad Summer School, where her talent, enthusiasm and hard work led to her selection for the final team. Sophia and the Australian team will compete against students from all across the world towards the end of May.

Well done to Lorna (Y6) who was awarded Second Prize in the 2023 RSL Woden-Valley Sub Branch Anzac Essay competition for her essay on the Vietnam War. Mr Greg Kennett, the Secretary of the Woden-Valley Sub Branch, surprised Lorna at the Junior School Assembly this week and presented her with her medal and prize money.

A huge congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 da Vinci Decathlon teams, who both finished first overall at their competition on Tuesday. The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition for school students, where teams compete across 10 disciplines in activities designed to challenge and stimulate their minds. Our Junior School students have experienced significant success in the da Vinci Decathlon in recent years. The standard of their responses was excellent, thanks to their ability to marvellously transfer their classroom learning in a practical setting. Congratulations also to our Years 8 and 10 teams who placed third overall, and our Year 9 team who placed second.

Genevieve (Y7) has been selected to represent the ACT in the Sportclimbing Australia 2023 Youth National Championships. Genevieve will travel to Sydney towards the end of May to compete.

CGGS' The House program hosted 'Budget-Judge It' at Yhuuramulum this week, in recognition of the release of the 2023 Federal Budget. Around 50 students from schools across the ACT and interstate were tasked with preparing a six-minute reply to the 2023 Federal Budget based on their political party, and respond to a two-minute Q&A from the audience. The judges were thoroughly impressed with the student's performances, acknowledging that the future of our Nation is in safe hands with an incredible generation of young people in economics. Thank you to the schools who joined us.

15 students represented CGGS at the ACT Swimming Championships recently, with several placing in the top three of their events. Official results for this competition will be released shortly.

Several students competed at the Independent Girls' Schools Sporting Association (IGSA) Cross Country recently. Stand out performances included Olivia's (Y7) fifth place in the 13 years, Audrey's (Y10) sixth place in the 16 years, and Rosemary's (Y11) eighth place in the 17 years.
