CGGS teacher awarded Rising Star

Lachlan McGinness

Congratulations to CGGS Science teacher Mr Lachlan McGinness, who has been recognised by The Educator Australia as a Rising Star for 2022, the only awardee in the ACT. The Rising Star list recognises the best and brightest talent in education across Australia.

Lachlan was nominated by his peers at CGGS for his exceptional work in promoting and teaching Science to girls, and for his work at the Australian National University (ANU) as a teacher of university-level physics in the ANU Extension Course. Many of the students Lachlan inspires in this course are not only from CGGS, but from other schools in Canberra and beyond.

Lachlan also contributes to Indigenous girls in Science programs, has had work published in academic journals and has created dynamic teaching resources for teachers all across Australia.

Lachlan has a great aptitude for encouraging, engaging and supporting students in all aspects of their learning, and spends significant personal time in sharing his love of Science with others. He is a very deserving recipient of the Rising Star award.

Lachlan was humbled to receive the award, and shared his appreciation for his colleagues at CGGS. "I think it is great that there are awards that recognise the hard work of teachers. There are so many teachers at our school that work very hard for our students and deserve recognition. I am so lucky in the Science Faculty to have such a strong team of teachers who work together and go above and beyond what is required of them to do what is best for our students."

Lachlan says the key to his teaching is adaptability. "A teacher cannot have just one teaching style. The art of teaching is customisation, delivering the content in a way that works for the group of students who you have in front of you. I like to make use of cooperative teaching strategies that make students think for themselves and be active in their learning."

We are so proud of Lachlan and his achievement. We aim to attract the best staff to CGGS, and provide them with opportunities to thrive and build a rewarding career. Well done, Lachlan!
