Years 7 to 10
Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS) is an engaging and supportive learning environment with a curriculum that reaches well beyond the classroom. Students are offered a physically and intellectually inspiring education which allows them to reach their full potential.
In Years 7 to 10, all students are prepared for the ACT Year 10 High School Certificate under the auspices of the Department of Education.
Students in Year 7 study a broad range of subjects. The core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Digital Technologies, and Health & Physical Education are undertaken for the full year. The subjects of Geography, History, Religion & Philosophy, Drama, Music and Visual Art are undertaken for a semester each. In addition, students choose two languages from French, Japanese, Latin and Chinese to study for a semester each.
Students in Year 8 continue to study a broad range of subjects. The core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Health & Physical Education, and Design Technologies are undertaken for the full year. The subjects of Geography, History, Religion & Philosophy, Performing Arts, Music and Visual Art are undertaken for a semester each. Students will choose one language from French, Japanese, Latin or Chinese to study for the year.
English, Mathematics, Science, Health & Physical Education remain core subjects in Year 9. At this level mathematics and science are streamed. Geography and History are studied for a semester each. At the end of Year 8, students have the opportunity to select electives, with parental consent, for Years 9 and 10. Elective subjects: Asian Studies, Chinese, Commerce, Dance, Design and Food, Drama, French, German, Digital Technologies, Design and Textiles, Japanese, Latin, Music, Sports Science, STEM, Visual Art, Negotiated Study.
English, Mathematics, Science, Health & Physical Education remain core subjects throughout Year 10. Flexible Learning is another core subject which is explained below. Students choose two elective subjects in Year 10. Elective Subjects: As listed above in Year 9 with the addition of Geography, History and Philosophy and Ethics.
All Year 10 students participate in the Flexible Learning course. This course is designed to support students in their studies, allow for personalisation of learning and to help students make choices and prepare for their senior studies, university studies and future work.
