From The Principal

At a Grammarian’s reunion some time ago, two Grammarians were telling me the story of how they met at a social event. They introduced themselves to each other and somehow started talking about the influence their school had on their future careers. One said, my school really pushed me hard, they knew I was smart but lazy. They challenged me all the way. She had ended up with a PhD and a job in science research. The other said, my school wasn’t like that. They knew I didn’t have much confidence, they supported me and encouraged me. They helped me to see what I could do. She was now an EA to a successful business man. They both agreed that the fact that they had been to a girl’s school had allowed them to succeed academically. The older woman then said, ‘by the way where did you go to school?’ Of course they found they had both been to Girls Grammar.

This week we had our regular open morning for prospective parents. One said to me ‘you obviously have excellent science facilities, is that the main thrust of the school?’ I explained that while we were proud of our facilities and achievements in science, we are aiming to be strong in every area because every student is different. Just like the Grammarians found as they talked to each other, we want to encourage and stretch each student appropriately and in the areas where they are passionate. We want to engage their potential ability and extend it.

On a different note, this week one Year 6 student told me about her first day at the ELC. She had been very nervous and saw the day as a huge hurdle. She came home triumphantly and said that she had had a great day and it was all over. She was surprised when they said she had to go to school again tomorrow. She said her parents didn’t like to tell her she would be attending school for the next 14 years!

Congratulations to all students.

Well done to Georgia Kinnane, Year 8 Deakin, who won first prize in the High School Colour section of the Friends of the Australian National Botanic Gardens Schools Photographic Competition with her independent entry, "Looking Underneath". Georgia received a $150 prize awarded to the school and a certificate. Georgia presented the framed photograph to Mrs Coutts at the full school assembly this week and spoke beautifully about the competition.

P&F President Ms Mareeta Grundy-Reid addressed the assembly about the upcoming school fete and I would like to thank the Fete Committee for their great work around this community event.

Last week our Debating and Public Speaking students excelled in local and Sydney competitions and particular thanks to Mr Marman and the coaches who prepared the teams.

Have a great week.
