The lockdown hasn’t deterred our debating teams, who have seen success across several debating competitions. We have eight teams engaged in the AHIGS Archdale inter-school debating competition, competing once a week on a virtual platform. A huge congratulations to Bella Mun (Y12), who was selected to be a part of the Archdale Representative Debating team after her outstanding performance in the opening rounds of this competition. Our Year 6, 7/8, 9, 11 and 12 teams have also been competing in the NGS National Virtual competition, with Year 11 finishing at the top of their pool and progressing to the knock-out rounds.
The RiotACT wrote a great article on one of our entrepreneurial students, Sofia Green (Y10), who at 15 years of age owns her own cosmetics company, Apollo Cosmetics. The name for her business came from her science obsession, and her love for the Apollo 13 mission. Sofia’s confidence and perseverance are inspiring; we look forward to seeing her continue her success with Apollo Cosmetics.
Congratulations to Sophie Buckland and Alexis Au (Y10), who were selected to attend the 2021 KPMG Canberra STEM event on 23 July. The two girls heard from technologists, consultants, scientists, entrepreneurs and other professionals on career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
Congratulations to the 2021 Coutts Cup for Creative Writing winner, Elyssia Heckmann (8R). Her story, “World of Memory”, was selected as the standout entry by the English faculty for its imaginative approach and thoughtful engagement with the theme, combined with a strong command of creative expression. The Coutts Cup was donated by former Principal Ms Anne Coutts, who wanted to encourage students to participate in creative writing. The 2021 Coutts Cup coincided with Book Week (23-27 August). All senior school students were invited to submit a story engaging with this year’s theme, “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”. Congratulations also to Ingrid Stening (9R) and Zida Chang (7R), who receive Highly Commended awards for their entries, which the English faculty wished to acknowledge as deserving of special praise. The Coutts Cup and prizes will be presented to the winners at assembly on their return to school.
Congratulations to Isabella Collins (6B), Trish Nguyen (6B) and Leila Biddington (Y5), who were selected to play for the South Canberra region in Netball, competing in the ACT Netball Championships on the 26/27 June. Isabella and Trish played in the U12 representative team, while Leila played for the U11 team. Isabella was elected as co-captain of the U12 team. Leila’s U11 team finished as runners-up in the grand final.
Well done to all our students on their achievements.
