Twelve CGGS students took part in the 21st Australian Combined Schools Music Festival (ACSMF), hosted this year by Sydney Grammar School. The festival is held every two years and brings together musicians from thirteen schools and six states and territories. CGGS had students take part in all three festival ensembles, the orchestra conducted by Daniel Carter, the choir conducted by Réka Csernyik and concert band conducted by John Lynch.
We travelled by bus, along with CGS students, to Sydney Grammar on Wednesday, 26 of June before having a welcome afternoon tea and beginning rehearsals. Over the course of the festival, CGGS students were billeted in groups with Sydney Grammar and other local Sydney school families. We took part in intensive full-day rehearsals over Thursday and Friday, and thoroughly enjoyed the private ferry tour of the harbour and late-night visit to Luna Park.
Saturday was a day of soundchecks and run-throughs before the ensembles performed to a packed concert hall on Saturday night. The concert opened with a student composed fanfare, before each ensemble performed their repertoire. The evening finished with a combined performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, which involved the 200 strong choir, a brass Banda and the orchestra. After that some students even continued on to the Choir Europe Tour!
Thankyou to Mr Rabe, Ms Her and Mr Copeland for accompanying the 12 of us on the trip. We were very excited that Mrs Owen made the journey up to listen to the Saturday concert, and hope that she enjoyed the music as much as we did.
