Articulating or acting?

Posted 4 June 2021 12:31pm

This week in our Reconciliation Week assembly, we heard from two exceptional speakers: Dr Eleanor Robin (a Grammarian, 1960) and Ms Leona Landers, a former member of the Secretariat for the Aboriginal Reconciliation Council from 1992-1995 and a descendant of the Mununjali and Waka Waka of South East Queensland, who have worked tirelessly on furthering the reconciliation journey in Australia.  Dr Robin reminded us of the theme for National Reconciliation Week 2021, that reconciliation is about action and not just words.  So many of our students are passionate about issues that matter deeply to them and we are proud of the way our students care for what is happening in the world around them.

Many students wish to make a lasting change and that change must begin with individual action.  Change begins with the words you use to speak to or address another person, in conversation, online and in writing.  Change begins by acknowledging the past and working mindfully to make positive pivots or redirections in the future, learning from history.  Change begins through actions such as always putting rubbish into a bin, actively recycling rubbish, minimising water waste, and being mindful of packaging.  Change begins through supporting others and standing by their side when they report something unjust or difficult.  Change begins from within each of us and is only sustainable through habit.

Words come easily and sometimes loudly, but without action they are easily negated by more convincing or sensationalised words.  How we act begins and ends with us.  What is one change you can make today to begin improving the situation of yourself, others or the planet?
