The gift of education

Our School is distinguished by its long-standing position as the leading girls’ school in the national capital. As we look towards our Centenary we also honour the spirit of our founders, and in particular Emily Harriet Elizabeth Ayckbowm, who through her experiences, wrote about her commitment to a life devoted to:

Helping those in need… and bringing them to a better life through education and a love of the Church.

Sister Emily believed in the transformative power of education – and that everyone had a right to experience and be uplifted by it – as a way of living a fuller life.

As we reach the half-way mark in the year, it is a time to reflect on our contribution to this city and how we can better serve by ensuring equal opportunity for all children and young women.

Our Scholarships and Bursaries program gives opportunities to students who, due to cultural, financial, or geographical boundaries, may not have the privilege of a Girls Grammar education.

Selina Wiesel, who recently performed at the Gabriel 40th anniversary celebrations, is a Year 12 student from Yass and has been playing the cello for eight years. She has enjoyed every minute of being part of the Music Academy since Year 7, from Symphony Orchestra to Quartets and Quintets, and is now the Orchestra Captain. Her passions outside of music include soccer, science and sustainability. Selina is a recipient of the Janine Murphy Memorial Scholarship.

When Dr Olivia Murphy was asked what her mother Janine saw as being the essential quality required for this Scholarship, she replied without hesitation:

‘Service above and beyond self.’

In 2020, three Year 12 boarders secured extraordinary opportunities in the USA as a result of their schooling at CGGS; two on rowing scholarships at prestigious universities and a third boarder/student earning a place at the renowned Parsons School of Design in New York.

Canberra Girls Grammar School has been championing the advancement of children and young women for almost 100 years, and we will continue to do so in the spirit of our Founders.
