International Students @ CGGS

Canberra Girls’ Grammar School (CGGS) has successfully educated many international students. International students are warmly embraced by our community and are encouraged to participate fully in school life. CGGS is committed to ensuring our international students settle in comfortably and are well supported and cared for during their stay.

Since foundation in 1926, CGGS has taught international students. Some of the earliest international students were from the surrounding Embassy families. Today, our international students come from all over the world and the majority of them choose to live in our Boarding House to experience and enjoy the benefits of living and learning in Canberra and to develop life skills such as self-confidence and a sense of belonging to a community.

The Boarding House

The Boarding House provides accommodation for up to ninety-five boarders and ten residential staff. Dormitories for up to four boarders are available for younger students with double or single rooms available for senior students. The Boarding House Dining Room provides delicious and well-balanced meals. More information on the Boarding House is available here: http://www.cggs.act.edu.au/pages/page211.asp.

Curriculum and Co-curricular

CGGS enrols international students from Year 7 to 12. Students are offered a wide and varied academic curriculum which allows them to reach their full potential. Students are prepared for the ACT Year 10 School Certificate and the ACT Year 12 Certificate, under the auspices of the Department of Education and Board of Senior Secondary Studies respectively. CGGS is currently a candidate school to introduce the International Baccalaureate’s Diploma Programme for students in Year 11 and 12 from 2011. A range of co-curricular activities are offered to students as part of the holistic curriculum at CGGS. Students are encouraged to participate in a selection of co-curriculum activities. More information on the Senior School is available here: http://www.cggs.act.edu.au/pages/page92.asp.

Application and Assessment

We require all students to be able to take their classes in English.  We do have ‘English as a Second Language’ facilities but they are not intensive.  We do prefer to interview and test our international students at CGGS before issuing the necessary papers for them to apply for their Student Visa.

CGGS does not actively market for international students and currently depends on word-of-mouth recommendations from its past and current international students and families. Recruitment of students is conducted at all times in an ethical and responsible manner and is consistent with the requirements of the curriculum. Appropriately qualified staff assess the extent to which the applicant is likely to achieve the outcomes of the course based on the applicant's level of English and academic results.

The CGGS Overseas Student Policy contains more information on application and assessment. This policy is available by contacting our Director of Admissions (details below).

CGGS will not accept enrolments for international students through agencies.

Local Guardian

Every international student must have a local guardian, that is someone whom we can refer to in an emergency.

Health Insurance

It is a requirement that students take out Private Health Insurance whilst studying in Australia. The 2010 cost for this cover is AUD $354 per year through Medibank Private. CGGS does not arrange payment of this on behalf of the students for visa application purposes.

Fees and Other Payments

Fees for Tuition and/or Boarding are payable to the School for each year of the course, one term in advance. This amount can vary from year to year. Pro rata fees may be charged where the student’s start date at the School falls outside the established school term dates.

Please click here for the Scale of Fees - 2010:

Textbook Hire: Textbooks are hired on an annual basis and the cost is indicated on Scale of Fees – 2010 (http://www.cggs.act.edu.au/pages/images/Scale%20of%20Fees_2010.pdf).

Excursions and School Camps: Charges for School Excursions and Camps will be added to parents accounts as necessary each term.

Uniform cost will vary for each student depending on the year the student is enrolled; the student’s clothing size; and the co-curricular activities chosen by the student.
