MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Ensemble Extravaganza
I was very pleased to attend last Sunday afternoon’s concert. It was very pleasing to watch performances from our Junior and Senior Percussion Ensembles, along with the Flute Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, the Gabriel Quartet, Clarinet Ensemble and Saxaphone Ensemble. There are many occasions when we hear these particular instruments as part of the orchestra or a band, but it is very special to be able to listen to them and gain an appreciation for the special tone and quality which they bring to a larger group. I have very much enjoyed the Sunday Concerts and believe that we have also been able to say a fitting farewell to our Year 12 students who have made such a wonderful contribution to music during their years at CGGS.
I would encourage you to attend the Australian Schools Music Festival Gala Concert at 4pm on 15 September. Canberra Grammar School is the host school for the Festival and it is pleasing that the CGGS Hall will be the venue for the final concert. This will be a more formal concert than our Sunday Series with the Governor General and his wife in attendance. The music will be wonderful and we will be able to see our students reach new heights again in their performances.

Social activities held at School
During last week we held an Op Shop Ball for our Year 11 and 12 students and a Social for our Year 7 students. The purpose of such evenings is to allow our students to socialise in a supervised setting. When I first arrived at CGGS, I was asked by a number of parents why the School did not arrange social activities with CGS or other schools. After consideration, Fiona Godfrey and I spoke with the staff and we decided that a social at each Year level would be appropriate and would enable our students to socialise in a supervised environment.
We have been very happy with the socials which have been run for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. The students have been well behaved and generally appreciative of the activity and the time that has been taken in its organisation. The Year 10 Semi Formal is well organised and we appreciate the efforts the Year 10 Semi Formal Committee which comprises parents, students and staff.
For socials involving Year 11 and 12 students, we are concerned about whether the benefits of such activities outweigh the negative aspects which can arise. For the majority of students who attended the Op Shop Ball last week, their behaviour was impeccable. It is unfortunate, however, that the behaviour of a few weighs heavily when we consider the success of a social. We have become more and more concerned when dealing with students who have consumed alcohol before their arrival at the function and then have to be asked to leave. We are also concerned that inappropriate behaviour on the part of a small group of students takes time for staff to deal with on the night or during the next days when incidents come to light.
Social activities require a large number of staff members who willingly give of their time to supervise. Our Senior Council has significant involvement in the organisation of most of the socials and they place considerable stress on themselves because they want the evenings to be enjoyable. The School hires security guards for socials and our caretaker is involved in these activities.
I believe that it is time to consider whether socials for students in Year 11 and 12 are beneficial for the School or for the students. The reputation of the School is certainly tarnished by the poor behaviour of a small group of students.
Student Leadership 2008
I will announce the 2008 Student Leaders at Assembly next Tuesday. Prior to Assembly we will gather the Year 11 students and the current Senior Council and announce the leaders. This will allow the students time to congratulate their peers. I am also well aware that students place a great deal of importance on attaining leadership positions, therefore the staff and I will speak with the students and reassure those that while they may not have achieved a position, their leadership in the School will be important.
I would like to commend all students who applied for leadership positions. Each student undertook to write a CV and address the selection criteria. I interviewed all students who had nominated for School Captain, School Vice Captain, SRC Chairperson and House Captain positions. At all times the students have demonstrated leadership skills and courtesy. Each student will make a wonderful contribution to the School in 2008, and each has clearly communicated their desire to lead our younger students.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL%20web.jpg)
Social Activities
Last Thursday evening, the Senior Council students hosted an Op Shop Ball for students in Years 11 and 12 and their counterparts at CGS. The evening had been primarily organised to provide further social opportunities for students currently in Year 11 and the rational behind the event was to give the girls (and boys) an opportunity to dress up and socialise without the associated costs of a more formal function. The Senior Council had also coordinated the event to raise money for an orphanage they are supporting in Mozambique.
It was disappointing to note that while the majority of students behaved in an admirable fashion, a small number of students did not conduct themselves in a socially acceptable manner. As a result, we will have to think long and hard in the future as to whether we hold another function of this type for students in Years 11 and 12. All students are fully aware before they go to any social function that the ongoing provision of social activities is contingent on its success.
I would, however, like to take this opportunity to formally thank all of the Senior Council students for their hard work in the lead up to and on the night of the Ball. They showed great maturity and determination in the planning and execution of the evening. While we do not have a final figure for the money that was raised, I have no doubt that it will be well received at the orphanage.
On Friday evening it was the Year 7 students turn to party at the combined CGGS and CGS social. The event, which was staged at CGS this year, was predominately organised by the senior students of both schools. They put a great deal of effort into ensuring the Year 7s had a number of activities designed to get to know each other. It was particularly pleasing to see that a large number of students had gone to a lot of effort to dress up in theme and to hear that they were very well behaved throughout the evening.

Highly Successful Open Day
This afternoon, approximately 45 students from Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 acted as School Ambassadors at our second Open Day for the year. While the majority of the students acted as Tour Guides, we also had some students directing visitors to our Reception area. The day was a great success and we had many interested parents and their daughters to the School who were not only impressed by our fantastic facilities, but the calibre of our students. Without exception the visitors commented on the enthusiasm and pride that the Tour Guides showed toward their School.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL%20web.jpg)
We are Measuring Up in the Junior School
How do you think we measure up? We have been exploring this very theme all week in recognition of National Literacy and Numeracy week. In all classes and at all levels, activities related to this theme have been explored and wonderful links between classes in the Junior School and Senior Schools have been made as in some cases older and younger students have worked together. Year 9 Science students designed and organised the Measurement Olympics for the Year 4 students. Year 3 students enjoyed a Treasure Hunt, also designed by Year 9 students. In Years 5 and 6 students and their parents joined forces for a Trivia Quiz, with (you guessed it) measurement related questions! The Junior Primary students were not forgotten, either. They did special activities in the classrooms all week and there was a storyteller. There were even competitions that kept the staff on their toes!
Parents are invited to look at the display in the Library that showcases the inspiration for this year’s theme. We certainly believe we have more than measured up!

Father’s Day in the Junior School
We hope all the fathers in our School community felt acknowledged and recognised for the important place they play in the lives of their children by participating in the range of events for Father’s Day. The ELC hosted a special Father’s Day breakfast in the Early Learning Centre, followed by a short performance assembly. It finished just in time for the dads to head off to work. The children were delighted to present lovingly crafted paper ties for their dad to wear to work, which I am sure, were worn with pride.
The Junior Primary students also invited their fathers to the Junior School for their Father’s Day activities. It’s a special day and the students were thrilled to share this time with their fathers. An afternoon of fun and togetherness included father themed stories, and interesting hands on activities, such as Grass Seed Hairy Heads, helicopters and spirals.
Thank you to all the dads and grandfathers who joined in these events.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS
Junior School
On Saturday 1 September, 21 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 competed in Tournament of Minds (TOM) Southside Regional Finals. This is a national competition where teams of seven students from a mixture of Year levels, work together to solve a long term challenge over six weeks and train to solve a spontaneous challenge given on Tournament Day. There were three teams entered from the Junior School – two language literature teams and one social science team.
This year, the language literature problem was entitled Generating Genre and involved creating a new genre for Pangaea Bookshop. The Bookshop was going out of business because all of the existing authors were bored with writing in their existing genres. In order to find new ideas, they needed to recruit three enthusiastic readers with fresh ideas. Golden bookmarks were hidden in books from the most popular genres in order to find the new recruits.
Three well known authors who were recognised experts in writing in different genres had to be researched. The authors had to be seen as assisting in the creation of the new genre. Finally the new genre had to be presented to the bookshop’s representative and authors convincing them of the merit of the new genre and prove that it would excite readers of the 21st Century.
The Social Science team had to solve the problem It All Adds Up. As a group, representing a number of special interest groups, the team had to create and present a television advertisement of exactly 30 seconds on an issue of national or global importance. The team then had to illustrate the target group’s reactions after watching the television advertisement.
On Tournament Day, all teams had to solve a spontaneous or ‘on the spot’ challenge where they were judged on the creativity of their responses and how well they worked together as a team.
All three teams performed well on the day and can be very proud of their efforts. Throughout the six weeks, new friendships were forged and creative thinking skills and team work skills were enhanced.
The students who competed in TOM at the ANU last Saturday were:
Team 1: Julia Donnelly, Kate Johnston, Noorya Ahmed, Hannah Gain, Phyllida Behm, Matilda Millar-Carton and Charlotte Strong. Team 2: Emily Campbell, Sally Waterhouse, Ellie Caspersonn, Melinda Fule, Cassidy Shaw, Niki Johnson and Sophie Harris. Team 3: Bethanie Ferraro, Brittany Staniforth, Renita Arumugam, Priscilla Symmes, Michelle Lee, Belinda Weiss and Iona Claringbold.
At the presentation ceremony on Saturday evening Team 1 and Team 3 were awarded Honours for their performances on the day. Both teams now move on to the next level of the competition – the ACT Territory Final, to be held at ANU on Saturday 22 September.
Jillian Shaw Tournament of Minds Coordinator
Senior School
Tournament of Minds (TOM) provides those involved with the opportunity to foster cooperative learning and teamwork and develop creative problem solving approaches and techniques.
This year, we had two very enthusiastic and hard working TOM teams, one in the Maths/Engineering challenge and another in the Language/Literature challenge. They made a considerable effort to prepare for six weeks before Tournament Day. On the day, they had 10 minutes to present their solution to their long term challenge and they also completed a spontaneous (unprepared) challenge. Their presentations were witty and well acted, with well made backdrops to support their themes.
The Maths/Engineering team were delighted to be awarded Honours and to progress to the ACT Territory Finals later this month. Good luck girls!
What the students valued most about the experience was the opportunity to learn to work well in a team with others from different year groups. What the facilitator values most are the flights of imagination that result in an amazing team performance!
The team members were:
Language/Literature Team: Natascha Vale, Mischa Kalachov, Charmian Sim, Madeleine Harwood, Alex Shields, Sam Roald and Alex Harwood.
Maths/Engineering Team: Imogen Brown, Lauren Ashman, Tara Dear, Adrienne Owen, Sasha Naidoo, Monique Seaniger and Mirja McLean-Engstrom.

CHICKEN POX
Please be advised that one of our students has been diagnosed with chicken pox. This is caused by the same virus as chicken pox. Any student with an immune deficiency (e.g. leukemia or receiving chemotherapy) should be excluded from school for their own protection.
CONFIRMATION SERVICE%20web.jpg)
Congratulations to the students who were confirmed by Bishop George Browning, with help from our Chaplain, the Rev Paul Harris, last Sunday at our Family and Friends’ Service, held in our Chapel of the Annunciation.

P&F ASSOCIATION
Our annual Trivia Night was held on Friday night and was well supported by both parents and staff with 17 tables squeezed into the Elizabeth McKay Aquatic Centre. After five rounds of questions the scoring was close and we had two teams with equal points. Winners on the night were:
Chris Cassella did a great job of as Master of Ceremonies. Not only did everyone have a great time but we managed to raise approximately $1000 for the School as well.
A special thanks to all the local businesses who supported the event:
- Greater Union Manuka for four double passes;
- Chi.koo Kids at Mawson for a voucher;
- Kacy at Canberra Cakes for a great supper;
- William Hall, photographer, who took photos all night (to be shared shortly!) and
- all the gourmet food stall holders at the Bus Depot Markets who generously discounted their products for inclusion in the hampers.
Also thanks to the many people who helped out with the organisation, setting up, running the event and cleaning up – especially Ben Mackey, Jayne Francis, Sally Kaye, Suzanne O’Connor, Vanessa Crowe and Belinda Kenyon.
The event was a great credit to the main organiser, Tracy Mackey, and to her helper Karen Chester. Thanks for a great night!
A couple of dates for your 2008 diaries! Our AGM will be on 19 February, and Dr Michael Carr-Gregg (psychologist, author of books including The Princess Bitchface Syndrome) has been engaged by the P&F to make a return visit to talk with parents about adolescence and mental health problems in children and teenagers on 27 February. Not to be missed!
