MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Student Leadership

We are beginning the selection process for 2008 Student Leadership positions and your daughters will receive information about making application for positions available.

Given the importance of student leadership, we have continued to review the process over the last two years.

The first step in the process is for the senior students themselves to consider whether they would like to apply for a leadership position in 2008. This year, after discussion with the Heads of House, we have developed selection criteria which will be used by the Nominations Committee when considering applications for positions. I have included the selection criteria in this article.

All students who are considering making application for a leadership position must attend our Leadership Seminar which will be held at the Elizabeth McKay Aquatic Centre. During this Seminar, we give attention to leadership and our expectations of Student Leaders.

Students who are applying for a position on the Senior Council or House Vice Captain position will be required to submit a one page curriculum vitae and a one page document which outlines their ability to meet the selection criteria.

Students who make application for the positions of School Captain, School Vice Captain or SRC Chairperson will give a two minute speech at Assembly. This year, the students will be asked to give a formal presentation in which each will address the selection criteria.

Students who make application for House Captain and House Vice Captain positions will make a two minute formal speech which addresses the selection criteria at their House Assembly.

The Nominations Committee consists of :

  • Principal
  • Head of Senior School/Deputy Principal
  • Director of Pastoral Care
  • Director of Operations and Logistics
  • Heads of House
  • Head of Boarding House
  • Head of PDHPE
  • Co-curricular Sports Coordinator
  • Director of Music

The Head of Dance and Drama, Head of Art and Photography, Head of Textiles and Design and the Teacher-in-Charge of Debating and Public Speaking will be consulted in relation to positions specific to their Departments.

The role of the Nominations Committee will be to consider all applicants and their ability to meet the selection criteria. In my position as Principal, I will interview students who have nominated for School Captain, School Vice Captain and SRC Chairperson. The Heads of House may also interview applicants for House Captain.

The voting procedures which have previously been used, will be continued for 2008.

Our student leaders are valued in the School and they make an enormous contribution during the year. It is important that students consider their applications in light of the time commitment and responsibilities involved. Students who are considering leadership within the School must also remember that they are making a commitment to servant leadership. Such leadership focuses on the contribution an individual can make to the School community and a desire to serve others, rather than the extrinsic awards which may come with a leadership position.

I would encourage parents to speak with their daughters about leadership and the responsibility that those who vote for the student leaders have to the School community. The selection criteria give attention to skills and qualities that are expected in a leader which go far beyond whether a student is popular with her peers. The students who vote for our student leaders must consider whether the candidates have made a contribution to the School and whether they are individuals who are prepared to stand by what they believe is right, rather than adopt a point of view because they believe that this will gain popularity with their peers.

The selection criteria to be used by the Nominations Committee follows:

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

CGGS news 0721 snowsportsACT Snow Sports Competition

Last Tuesday afternoon, Brad Griffiths, Sue Harrison, Jenny Hunter and 58 students from Years 7 to 12, headed to Perisher Blue to compete in the 2007 ACT Snowsports Competition. The event, which was held over four days, attracted students from a number of schools from the ACT and southern region of NSW, and included snowboarding, alpine and cross-country disciplines. Overall, CGGS performed very well with a number of teams making it through to the National Championships, which will be held at Mt Hotham in Victoria later this term. Morgan Evans (12R) performed particularly well, taking out first place in the Division 1 Alpine section. This means that she was the fastest student in the competition. A special mention should be made of the role of the Captain of Snowsports, Isabelle Whitton (11R), who not only led the team in admirable fashion but assisted with all facets of the organisation and support of students competing.

Student Leadership

During the week I had an opportunity to speak to the Year 11 students about Senior Council leadership positions for next year. I spoke to them about the sort of qualities that were required to be a successful leader and the work and time commitments required for such a role. We discussed the need for leaders to provide direction, exercise influence and to mobilise and work with others to meet common goals.

I spoke to them about the mechanics of the selection process, including who was eligible to nominate students for the Senior Council positions and which Year levels and staff were able to vote for particular positions. I also detailed the application requirements (stated in this week’s Principal’s message) and deadline (nominations close on Wednesday 15 August). Voting for Senior Council positions opens on Wednesday 22 August and closes on Friday 24 August. Students will be notified of the results soon afterwards.

National Tree Planting Day

Last Friday, a group of Year 9 students, Amy Goodall, Tanya Mackey and Anna Douglass, celebrated National Tree Planting Day by planting an ornamental pear tree near the Empire Circuit entrance of the School. The tree, which will turn fiery shades of red and orange in autumn, will make a welcome addition to the School grounds.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Caitlin (7K) and Jessica (10K) White who have both been selected to represent the ACT in upcoming soccer competitions in the near future. Jessica has been selected to represent ACT schools in the Australian Schools Soccer Carnival to be played in Darwin from 12 to 18 August, while Caitlin has been selected to play soccer for the ACT at the PSSA National Carnival, which will be held in Brisbane from 16 to 21 September. Soccer skills obviously run in the family!

Congratulations to Tahlia Davidson (7K) who has also been selected to play soccer for the ACT at the PSSA National Carnival.

Congratulations to Natalie Archer (7R) who has been selected to represent the ACT in the National Schools Cross Country Championships which will be held in Perth later this month. We wish her well.

Congratuations to Laura Mackinnon (11W) on being selected to represent the ACT in the U19 Softball team to compete at the Nationals in Tasmania in January.

Drop Off and Pick Up Zone

Following a number of complaints, parents are reminded to follow the guidelines when collecting or delivering students from the Drop Off and Pick Up Zone in the car park.

  • Drive to the far end of the zone
  • Students must get in or out of cars from the kerbside
  • Students are to get in and out of cars with their bags. We ask that you do not store school bags in the boot if using the Drop Off/Pick Up Zone
  • If your child is not waiting in the Waiting Area when you drive through, please continue and park in one of the bays to wait.
  • Parents who wish to take time to say farewell to their children are requested to park in one of the bays to avoid holding up others.
  • Drive slowly in the car park at all times.

We ask that everyone adhere to these guidelines to ensure that all students are safe and so the process for each family is as efficient as possible.

CHAPEL NEWS

HARP LESSONS ARE NOW AVAILABLE

There are many kinds of harps – from the large concert harp you see in the orchestra to tiny harps that can sit on your lap. At school we have a small lever harp for lessons and practice, so there is no need to haul a harp to school or even to have one at all. If you love it and want one of your own, just call HarpLore Australia or GanYar Harps, here in Canberra, and you can rent or buy harps of all shapes and sizes. Harp music is as varied as the sizes they come in and you can play classical, celtic, folk, jazz, blues or pop.

Lessons start in Term 3 with Liena Lacey, a new instrumental teacher to CGGS. If you would like to have lessons please come to the Music Department to collect a form.
