Posted CGGS Newsletter 27 - 11 September 2009 TEXTILE AND DESIGN NEWS Design for Fashion Excursion On Thursday 20 August, Year 11 and 12 Fashion Design students travelled to Sydney for their unit on Design for Fashion and Interiors. We began the day at One Minto, a display village in the outskirts of Sydney, where we were given a tour of display homes. Lucy Upton, an Interior Decorator from Guests Furniture Hire, presented a range of storyboards and specification books and explained her role in the process of decorating new homes to make them appealing to potential buyers. We then travelled to the Enmore Design Centre and were introduced to courses in Interior Decoration, Interior Design and Jewellery Design. The highlight of the day was most definitely our visit to Signature Prints in Rosebery. Signature Prints is a screen printing company that owns copyright of original Florence Broadhurst prints. Florence Broadhurst was an innovative wallpaper designer in the sixties and seventies and is the focus of the Year 11 and 12 major design brief this semester. Helen Lennie, co-owner of Signature Prints, was extremely generous in her willingness to show us around the showroom and workshop. We had the pleasure of observing printers and artists in their particular roles and then we were given the opportunity to do some prints of our own. Volunteers from the class printed original Florence Broadhurst screens to produce our own mementoes from the excursion to bring back to school. It was a very enjoyable and inspiring trip!

TEXTILES AND DESIGNS Fashion Illustration Workshop On Thursday 30 April and Friday 1 May, Eric Hagen, Fashion Illustrator and Lecturer at the University of Technology, Sydney, visited Year 10, 11 and 12 Fashion and Textile Design students. The students bought to class the designs that they have been working on and were taught by Eric a wide variety of skills and techniques to communicate these ideas through Fashion Illustration. The workshops were very practical and allowed students to experiment with a range of drawing media from bamboo pens and ink to collage. Eric demonstrated his techniques for Fashion Illustration and we were all blown away by his skill and speed! He made it all look far easier than it is! Students learnt some tricks of the trade such as mark making to represent facial features and shading to achieve dimension. He also brought along a range of portfolios from his university students to help the students understand some of the expectations of studying Design. We were left with a DVD of the UTS 2008 Graduate Fashion Parade and also a range of fashion figure templates to help as we practice our Fashion Illustration skills. Pip Prescott |

Photography - ‘Our Nation's Gardens' Photography Competition Winners
During Semester 2, 2008 the Creative Arts Faculty introduced Photography as a component of the Year 10 Visual Arts, Design and Technology course. Students were set a task that involved entering the annual Botanic Gardens competition and included an excursion to the gardens to take a range of creative and documentary photographic images. Each student in Year 10 was encouraged to submit four images; one for each of the competition's themes: black and white, people in the gardens, colour and digital manipulation.

These were judged by a committee of experts and Amy Goodall (10W) won a first prize of $150 in the open category for manipulated digital imagery. Shayani Dasanayaka (10D) received a Highly Commended certificate in the colour photography category. As a result of Amy being awarded first prize in this competition, the Creative Arts Faculty also received $150 and this will be put towards photographic resources for the Year 10 unit. The judges commented on the exceptionally high standard of entries from Canberra Girls’ Grammar School. Our congratulations are extended to all Year 10 students who entered this competition.

Eighteen students have been rehearsing, including Elective Dance students Chloe Bambach, Mercie Taylor, Nadeshka Withanage and Rebecca Wojcik, who contributed to the choreography. They have responded to Ausdance ACT’s theme for the festival, ‘Time to …’ by reflecting on the Griffin legacy – the city in the landscape – as Canberra approaches its centenary. It is a contemporary dance piece, using as its backdrop photography and video footage compiled with the help of teacher and visual artist Mr David Warren. Congratulations to Leah Winnett who will co-compere the evening over three nights.

Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 will be eligible to submit up to three artworks each for the first CGGS Annual Acquisitive Art Prize. Students do not need to be studying a Creative Arts subject to submit work for the prize. Two dimensional work completed in drawing, painting, digital media (including short films), photography, textiles and print media will be accepted. Unfortunately due to space restrictions three dimensional sculptural work will not be accepted. The Prize will be judged annually by a qualified member of the Canberra Arts Community from outside of the School. The exhibition of entries for the prize and the announcement of the winning entry and prizes for highly commended works will occur in Term 4. Students who are interested in entering work for this prize can pick up an application form and information from Mr Cooney, Head of Creative Arts Faculty, from Week six of this term.

On Wednesday evening our Year 10 Drama students attended a performance at the Playhouse of As you Like it, a Shakespeare classic directed by John Bell of the Bell Shakespeare Theatre Company.
Prior to the show our students met with the entire cast of the production, including Director John Bell, offering them a rare and unique insight into all aspects of performance and production elements. TEXTILES AND DESIGN GUEST SPEAKER
Senior Fashion Design students benefitted from the Fashion Marketing expertise of Kylie Petroni, managing director of Cackleberry, last Thursday.
Cackleberry is a new children’s boutique label based in Canberra with products ranging from clothing to nursery linen and children’s books all aimed at little boys aged three months to five years. The students had been introduced to the label in class via the website, www.cackleberry.com.au, to investigate some ideas for their own assignments: to develop their own product and company to be sold over the internet. Kylie kindly came in and spoke to the Year 11 and 12 students about the management and marketing of Cackleberry, presenting to the students a range of garments, promotional materials and design diaries. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story behind the birth of Cackleberry and would like to extend a big thank you to Kylie for taking some time out to speak to our students.

YEAR 11 and 12 ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY EXCURSION
On Thursday 27 March the senior Art and Photography students travelled to the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney to view Art Express, The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes and Sydney Now.
Art Express showcases a selection of the top Art and Photography works from students undertaking the Higher School Certificate. This exhibition provides an excellent opportunity for our students to see and engage with works created by their same age peers and to assist them in the development of their own creative endeavours. The Archibald Prize is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious art awards. JF Archibald’s primary aims were to foster portraiture, support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians. The announcement of the winner is always controversial and this year was no different. Kathryn Del Barton won with her work entitled You are what is most beautiful about me, a self portrait with her two children. Our students viewed the exhibition with great interest, offering up a range of different observations and opinions about all of the works on show.
Whilst the Art students were viewing the Archibald Prize, our Photography students undertook a lecture at the Museum of Sydney based on Photojournalism and Art Photography. This will assist them in preparation for their major portfolio task and increase their critical awareness about their own work and that of other photographers.
I would like to congratulate all of the students on their behaviour and their willingness to participate in this valuable creative learning experience. Thanks must also go to teachers, Elizabeth Chase and David Warren, for their participation on the day.

Dance Fest Launch On 19 September, CGGS was one of three schools chosen to preview its item for Dance Fest at the Launch of the event at the Canberra Theatre for the media, politicians and invited guests. Choreographed as a composition assessment piece by the senior Dance students and including eight Year 8 students, their piece, Glass Ceiling, was a reflection on the journey to social and political equality for women. The theme, particularly relevant to young women and important for forming positive self-image, was researched, and movement phrases were developed to communicate the theme. The students danced with grace, skill and maturity and their performance was very well received.
