Not Just for Geeks
This week guest speakers visited Year 10 IT classes to dispel the myth that IT jobs consisted of sitting in dark rooms and typing at a computer all day. Penny Collings, an IT lecturer at University of Canberra discussed with the students the large variety of IT careers available, many that consisted of working teams and were people orientated.
Two ex-students, Rebecca Marshall (2003) who is completing a Bachelor of Software Engineering at ANU and Katya Dibb (2003), who is completing a Bachelor of Graphic Design at UC also visited. Rebecca shared with the students that the aspect of IT she was really enjoyed was working in a project team to solve a problem for a client, from starting with the initial ideas to producing the final product. Katya described the different creative assignments she had worked on and how the IT skills gained at school were still useful.
The guests also had a informal chat with the students from the Year 12 IT class over a pizza lunch. The visit was very informative and hopefully will encourage more students to think about IT careers.
