MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Musical Evenings

During last week I was fortunate to attend the Guitar Fiesta at Canberra Grammar School and the Year 9 and 10 Recital at CGGS. Both evenings were most entertaining and I would like to acknowledge the talent of both the students and our Music teachers. The Recital took us through instrumental pieces, solo and group singing performances, group instrumental pieces and the performance of Year 9 and 10 Choir. The Guitar Fiesta clearly demonstrated the wonderful work of nurturing our students in both the Junior and Senior Schools to be inspired by playing the guitar and playing a variety of music. I know that other recitals held last week were also well attended and wonderful.

Junior School Musical

It was a pleasure to attend the Junior School Musical on Wednesday evening. Alice - The Musical was colourful and entertaining. The large cast of students performed admirably and I would also like to congratulate the parents who were responsible for the colourful costumes.

My thanks to the production team: Jenny Johnson, Sara David, Bethany Farrell, Nichola McNally and Helen Shaw. Thanks must also go to the Junior School teachers who assisted the team and the students.

This is my third Junior School Musical and each one has been entertaining. I am always impressed by the enthusiasm of the students and the number of students who want to participate in these performances. We are very fortunate to have a Junior School in which students are able to persue their interests and gain valuable skills. The Senior School certainly benefits from the work of the Junior School staff in developing the many talents of the students.

Dinner for Leavers in the Boarding House

One of the traditions of the Boarding House is for our Year 12 students to arrange a dinner for our Y12 boarding students who complete their courses at the end of Semester 1. The menu of pizza, salad and sticky date pudding was chosen by our leavers and there were speeches of farewell and a PowerPoint presentation. The remaining Year 12 students also serenaded the leavers with a song. It was an emotional and most appropriate farewell for our students who have each made their own contribution to the Boarding House and the School.

Family and Friends Service

I would like to remind all parents that we will have a Family and Friends’ Service on Sunday 1 July at 9am at the Chapel of the Annunciation on the Senior School campus. The Service will be taken by Reverend Gayl Mills who is an Australian Federal Police Chaplain and a former parent of CGGS. Gail is looking forward to taking the Service and I am pleased that she has re-established a connection with the School during this semester as a result of events which have occurred within our community.

P&F Association

During this semester, the P&F Association executive has undertaken three major events. The sale of Entertainment Books; an Antique and Collectables Evaluation Day and a Movie Evening. The Movie Evening, which involved a screening of the latest Shrek film, was particularly well attended and proved to be most entertaining for children and parents. I would particularly like to thank Belinda Kenyon, Jann Carroll and Karen Chester for their organisation of Shrek 3. I am aware that Belinda Kenyon spent a considerable number of hours ensuring that the evening would be successful. Thanks to Jane Underwood, Wendy Kay, Suzanne O’Connor, Cathy Richardson and Petra Bouvain for their work on Hidden Treasures, which was the antique evaluation day. Jane Underwood worked with the antique evaluator to ensure that all would be in place for parents and friends of the School.

The School is very grateful to the P&F Association for the time it gives to the organisation of these fundraising activities. Our School has been able to purchase many resources as a result of the fundraising efforts of the P&F Association and these add to the education we can provide for our students. It is never easy for parents to combine their own careers and family activities with undertaking significant planning for such activities. It is important that we acknowledge this work and offer our sincere thanks.

I would also encourage members of the School community to attend the P&F Trivia Night on Saturday 31 August. A flyer can be found in this Newsletter. This will be my third Trivia Night and I can commend the evening. The Trivia Night is most entertaining and it is a good way to meet parents and staff in an informal setting.

Semester Summary

As is always the case, this has been a busy first semester. The first day of school for our Year 7 students was particularly memorable for me. For the first time we gave each student a portfolio which we hope will be used for certificates and other documents the students receive during their years at CGGS. As each student walked across the stage to accept her portfolio, I believe that we were acknowledging a new beginning for the students and welcoming them to the Senior School campus. The Induction Ceremony for our Senior Leaders and Year 12 students is an important day during the first term because we are formally acknowledging the leadership role of our Senior students. The Senior Council has organised a number of activities during this semester and they are now planning significant functions for the second semester.

Throughout the semester I have participated in a seven hour hike during the Year 8 camp and watched wonderful performances by our musicians, dramatists and dancers. During this term, I have come along to sporting fixtures on the weekend. The Autumn Concert and production of Mirror Mirror are still vivid in my memory. The students performed with great enthusiasm and it was evident to me that they were inspired by these activities. Equally, I enjoyed the Year 6 Concert and felt very happy that so many talented young ladies were moving through the School.

I also see the same level of commitment in our sporting teams. During this semester, I have cheered our Rowing Squad and Dragon Boats teams. Our students in these two sports have achieved many honours, but equally as important is their ability to work as teams and the enjoyment they obtain from their chosen sports. Our students continue to compete well in sporting competitions and it is enjoyable to watch the teams play each weekend. The students are well supported by their coaches and their parents.

We were pleased to welcome Fleur Froggatt (Class of 1989) for Founders’ Day. Since leaving CGGS, Fleur has achieved a great deal in her military career but she has also found personal achievement and satisfaction in her life. She is adventurous and willing to take risks in order to develop her personal qualities and I believe that she is an excellent role model for our students. It was also pleasing to welcome Old Grammarians back to the School to receive their 50 year Badges.

I have watched proudly as 700 fathers, daughters and sons attended our first Safe School Breakfast. I was just as proud when Head of Deakin House, Brad Cooney, returned from the Safe Schools Teachers’ Conference and told us that other schools were interested in taking up our Safe Schools Committee approach and our Policy document.

I have also shed tears this semester for the loss of School parents and our colleague, Karen Harris. It has been difficult to lead a School which has faced so much grief but staff, students and parents have supported each other and the School. I would particularly like to acknowledge the leadership of Heather Ablett in the Junior School, and her Deputy Principals, Lee Wilde and Damaris Patterson. I also have enormous confidence in our School Counsellors, Julie Smith, Sharon Prendergast and Paula Morelli. Our Counsellors have provided ongoing support to our students and staff. I have noted their ability to watch over the staff and students and measure whether they are in need of some words of comfort or support.

As we end the first semester I would like to acknowledge the work of our staff and the work of our students. I am currently reading semester reports and it is evident that many students have worked conscientiously and completed a very successful semester. The reports written by our staff, highlight not only their interest in the progress of their students but also their professional attitude in providing such detailed communication to parents and their children.

I wish all members of our School community a safe and enjoyable vacation.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

As another very busy semester draws to an end, it is timely to sit back and reflect on all that has been achieved, not only by individual students and teachers but the School as a whole. In what has been a very difficult semester, we have undergone a full School registration process, launched the Masterplan, delivered a number of excellent professional development opportunities, embarked on an organisational restructure and experienced a range of inspiring co-curricular events.

Boarders’ Parents’ Dinner

Last night, over 60 Boarders’ parents/guardians and staff gathered in the Boarding House for the annual Boarders’ Parents’ Dinner. This year, Tina Twigg in her first year full year as Head of the Boarding House, spoke about the importance of the close relationship with the parents and how much she values their input into the successful running of the Boarding House. Tina took time to introduce two people who will now be around the School a great deal, her husband, Paul Twigg, and our new Caretaker, (and husband of our School Nurse, Lindy Latta) Alan Latta.

The evening began with drinks and nibbles in the Visitors’ Sitting Room (VSR) with piano entertainment supplied by a number of boarders. Afterwards guests moved into the dinning room where Sarah Carlson, Boarding House Captain, delivered a welcome and Katherine Harley, Boarding House Vice Captain said grace. After dinner, Susan Just outlined the School’s Masterplan and the refurbishments in the Boarding House. The evening concluded with the drawing of the Boarding House raffle and further refreshments in the VSR.

The evening was a very special way to end the semester and it is always particularly pleasant to have an opportunity to talk to parents in a less formal setting. A special thank you is extended to Penny Crawford and Renea Alenaje from the Community Relations Department, Kate Bagnall, our artistic gardener,Tina Twigg and the rest of the Boarding House staff for their work and planning for what was a very enjoyable evening.

Salvation Army Winter Appeal

We have been approached by the Salvation Army to participate in The Salvation Army Winter Clothing Appeal. Currently, Salvos Stores have a shortage of warm clothing to give to those less fortunate. The appeal is designed to get donations from the public in the form of warm clothing such as jumpers, sweaters, cardigans, scarves, blankets, thermal wear etc.

Over the School holidays we ask that you have a look through your cupboards and wardrobes and if there is anything suitable to give please put it aside. The Salvation Army will be visiting our School in the first week of Term 3 (24 July) handing out bags to take home and fill. The filled bags just need to brought back to the School on 31 July and you will be helping to share the warmth this Winter.

For more information please do not hesitate to call Tony O’Connell, Retail Manager, Salvos Stores on 62390124 or 0404835418.

Student Achievements

She entered into all the sections for her age group; the 16 years and under Classical Song, World Song (usually classified as Folk Song) and Musical Theatre. Rochelle was amazingly placed first in each of her three sections which endorses the quality of our musicians at CGGS. Congratulations to Aurora Casadei (7G) who recently obtained an ‘A’ with Honours in her Grade 4 Piano exam.

All the best to Amanda Clifford (9D), Georgia Hardy (8K), Elly James (12D) and Charlotte Marshall (11B) who have all qualified to represent the ACT in the Australian Secondary Schools Swimming Competition to be held in Hobart in the coming weeks.

head SS news 0719 J DenleyCongratulations to Jenna Denley (12R) who has recently been awarded the Queen’s Scout Award. This is the highest award that can be achieved in the Venturer’s Section (14-18 year olds) of Scouting and is the most recognised award in the Scouting movement across in 216 countries around the world. Obtaining the Queen’s Scout Award involves undertaking challenges and completing activities in the four major areas of Adventurous Activities, Community Involvement, Leadership Development and Personal Growth. The Award aims at challenging the Venturer to expand their knowledge, strive to reach their potential and to become a well rounded citizen in an ever changing world. Recipients of this award must demonstrate a high level of Community Involvement (outside of the Award scheme), strong leadership qualities in all aspects of life, and demonstrate that they incorporate the Scout Law and Promise into their everyday life. In addition to completing at least 150 hours on these activities and challenges, the applicant is interviewed to assess whether they are a worthy recipient of the award. Jenna has achieved this award whilst striving to complete her gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. This is a remarkable achievement!

End of Semester

Finally, I would like to extend my best wishes to all CGGS families as we begin our mid year vacation. I hope that you have a very relaxing and memorable holiday period and we look forward to seeing all of our students returning safely on 23 July.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Alice - The Musical

This week was the culmination of the work of a large team of students, staff and parents who have worked collaboratively to prepare the 2007 Drama Club production, Alice - The Musical. It was indeed a triumph for everyone involved and was a delight to be part of the audience on both evenings. From the busy backstage and technical crews, who overcame technical difficulties to make sure props, lighting and sound were in place; to the flurry of parents assisting with make up and an array of elaborate costumes; to the musicians and the huge cast of actors who produced their best in two outstanding shows; it was a truly memorable experience. The evidence of committed rehearsals, dedication and determination was reflected in the shared joy of the performers and their audience.

Throughout Semester 1, a team of five teachers; Jenny Johnson, Sara David, Bethany Farrell, Nichola McNally and Helen Shaw, worked with a huge cast of over one hundred students every week. The commitment increased more recently with added practices on weekends as the performance dates loomed. In addition, a team of students, led by Peta-Jayne Smith, worked on the sets and props and a team of parents organised and made the stunning costumes.

The learning opportunity for our students involved in the production cannot be measured. During the process they have all made gains in confidence, whilst needing to persevere, tolerate, empathise and co-operate. This commitment has involved learning lines and songs, dance moves and stagecraft. Learning to work as part of such a large team towards a common goal is a life skill that is difficult to quantify, but shared success is the most satisfying.

Excellent performance, achieving one’s personal best, only comes as the result of persistence. It is the practice, repetition and working to perfect each step in the processes involved in each task which generates excellent performance.

Anglicare Winter Appeal

A huge array of donated goods collected in our School community has now gone to Anglicare for its Winter Appeal. Mr Ian Marshall from Anglicare was overwhelmed when he arrived this week with his car to take the goods. He needed to return the next day with a trailer, such was the amount! .These non perishable goods will be distributed during the coming months to families in need in the Canberra region. Thank you to everyone who has supported this most worthy cause.

Reporting

At the end of the semester, teachers prepare formal reports to sum up each student’s achievements for the half year. These reports will be posted home next week.

The comment from the teacher provides advice for parents on their son or daughter’s progress and constructive feedback on things that need attention for performance to improve. These reports will also give parents a picture of the level of their child’s performance with respect to the standard expected for the Year level.

To maximise the opportunity for every student to achieve his or her potential, it is vital that home and school work together to reinforce the notion that good results are the outcome of continuous hard work and a willingness to accept challenges which extend skills, knowledge and understanding.

End of Term

Please take the opportunity to check your entire child’s uniform over the holidays. Is every piece named? (It is surprising the number of items of School uniform that appear in Lost Property with no names!) Perhaps there is mending or general maintenance, such as hems to be restitched or collars and cuffs to be returned to their former glory by soaking in a bleach-based whitener? If new items are required, the Uniform Shop will be open on Thursday 19 July (12noon to 4pm) and Friday 20 July (10am-4pm).

I would like to wish everyone a safe and restful three week break from school. I extend my thanks to the staff, the students and the community for their hard work, support, encouragement and resilience throughout the term. The holidays will be a welcome relief for many, some of whom have been battling with winter colds and flu. For those travelling afar and for those staying closer to home, enjoy each day. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 23 July, ready for Term 3.

Coin Collection for Sids n Kids

Thank you to all who made a donation to ‘Sids n Kids. The Junior School raised $778.60. Congratulations!

CGGS Receives National School Chaplaincy Grant

We are delighted to advise that CGGS has been selected as one of 20 schools in the ACT to receive a Round 1 Grant from the Department of Education, Science and Training for the National School Chaplaincy Program.

The National School Chaplaincy Program recognises that schools play a key role in providing support and assistance for all students as they cope with the challenges and stresses of life. The receipt of this grant helps us to resource and expand our Chaplaincy services.

CGGS Supports Connections Zulu Choir

On 17 June, CGGS hosted a concert featuring the Connections Zulu Choir and Simunye Sound.

The tour was arranged by members of The Oaktree Foundation, Australia’s first youth-run international aid and development organisation. It consists of young Australians (all under the age of 26) who volunteer their time to "empower developing communities through education in a way that is sustainable".

A group of young musicians encountered the Connections Choir during a 2005 study tour. The choir is based in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, a region with endemic poverty, unemployment, crime and an extremely high rate of HIV/AIDS. Together they formed the group "Simunye Sound", where simunye is the Zulu for "we are one".

Mr Sizwe Mthemby, CEO of World Changers Academy gave an inspiring talk about the problems confronting the region. The World Changers Academy works to empower young South Africans through morals-based leadership and life-skills training.

The tour for the Choir represents the chance of a lifetime for its members, most whom have never traveled more than a hundred kilometres from the area where they were born.

Jigsaw Theatre Company presents

Emma’s Dynasty

Directed by Kate Shearer, written by William Yang

What if you discovered you had a secret history?

Emma thinks she’s like any other girl in Australia. But her life is about to completely change. Emma is soon led to a Chinese Grandmother she never knew she had, thanks to an ancient object at the National Gallery of Australia. Like a modern-day Alice in Wonderland, Emma is transported to another world. Emma’s Dynasty is a story about danger, travel, identity and the ways we can find out new things about ourselves. Through her Grandmother’s tales, Emma finds herself in Ancient China discovering opinionated dragons and life in the Imperial Court. Emma’s life is turned upside down again when her quest to find out about her family finds her in the middle of the Communist Cultural Revolution and, through a migrant experience in Australia, Emma’s own secret history unfolds. For 8 to 12 year olds and anyone who wants to be that age again.

Performance times: 30 June 6.30pm, 2 to 7 July, 10am and 12.30pm, 6 and 7 July also at 6.30pm and 10 to 12 July 10am and 6.30pm.
