LITTLE ATHLETICS

Posted CGGS Newsletter 05 - 6 March 2009

A number of CGGS Junior School and Early Learning Centre students take part in the Woden Little Athletics Club (WLAC) Saturday morning program.  Training sessions are held for all age groups, Tuesday and Thursday, 5pm to 6pm at the Woden Athletics field.

Each week the students move through a variety of events in their age groups (from U6 to U16). The weekly competition is designed to teach endurance and personal endeavour. Recording weekly results acts as an incentive to work out improvements and to achieve new Personal Best performances (PBs). We are entering the championships phase of the season, so we can expect more good results.

Highlights

Jessamy Patterson (U13 girls) has on at least two occasions jumped higher than our Junior School High Jump record. Jessamy has also shown good form in throwing the javelin.

Isobel Clark (U10 girls) competed in the Lanyon Little Athletics Carnival on Sunday 15 February. She achieved some great results coming third in Discus and Long Jump and fourth in 100m, 200m and 60m hurdles. Isobel was particularly pleased with her performance in the sprint events as she was right on the heels of a number of State or NSW champions.

Thomas Kennealy (U8 boys) has been blitzing the competition in hurdles and sprints.

Anjali Hurrell and Lena Christopherson (U7 girls) have been gaining personal bests (PBs)

We are now looking forward to competing in the Regional and ACT Championships.

At Woden Little Athletics this season a wide age range of students developed their skills and participation in ‘On Track”, a modified program for younger children. Throughout the season there was an emphasis placed on improvement through self and team support.  The students had great fun, made new friends and improved their fitness.

They had the opportunity to compete in carnivals and championships.  In the final weeks of the season, three students qualified to compete in the ACT Little Athletics Championships.  Madeleine Mackie (Y5) in the High Jump, Joanne Chalker (Y4) in 800 metres race, 700 metres walk, Shot Put and Discus and Mel Clery (Prep) in 50 and 100 metres races and Long Jump.  All three students performed well with Joanne Chalker receiving a medal for second in 700 metres Walk and Mel Clery for second in Long Jump and third in 50 metres race receiving medals.

The final event of the season was Presentation Day held at the Canberra Southern Cross Club.  The children were entertained and received participation medallions and club trophies.
