The students played really well and thank you to all the supporters who were out there with streamers, whistles and banners!

Well done to our 13/1 and 15/2 teams who finished runners up for the season. Congratulations to the 13/2s who took the honour of joint champions with no goals scored, even after extra time!!

JUNIOR SCHOOL HOCKEY 2008

The Hockey Season is sadly over for another year. This year CGGS Junior School had three teams playing hockey including a minkey team. All teams had a great season with many balls hit, goals scored and skills learnt by all.

The U11 Division 1 team showed fantastic improvement throughout the season, cheered on by enthusiastic and dedicated parents every week. Lil Mutton coached the team on Saturday mornings and they loved spending time with her and learning lots of new skills. As a team they worked hard every game and should be congratulated on a great effort this season.

The U11 Division 2 team was coached by the ‘indefatigable’ Mr P. This team went from strength to strength this season and made it into the Preliminary Final where they battled well but sadly went down against Valleys 2-1. The team had students who had played before and those who were new to the sport. The players worked hard to include the newcomers and teach them the vital skills of a hockey player. Their team work and good sportsmanship showed in the enjoyment they had during the season. Well done to the players in that team!

This year we also had a ,,inkey team made up with Year 2 and Year 3 students. They were a small team but were full of heart. Coached by Mark (Phoebe’s dad), they appeared to love every minute of the season, especially having ‘Tiger’, their mascot, sitting up on top of the goals every game to cheer them on. The U11 teams next year had better watch out because this is a group of hockey players ready to take on anything!

We bid a sad farewell to our sticks and mouthguards during the summer months and wait anxiously for the next season to begin and for the call from the sideline to ring out once more ‘Sticks down girls!!!’

We had three teams compete in the annual ASC Hockey Carnival on Tuesday 29 July 2008.

The results were as follows:

  • Year 7 and 8 Team placed second
  • Year 9 and 10 Team placed first

These are the best overall results that CGGS has achieved since the ASC inception.

Congratulations to all players who played and represented their school with pride.

Junior School

In the hockey season that has just concluded, the Junior School had three teams entered in the local competition. The Hurricanes and the Fireballs played with great spirit each week often against older more experienced opponents. The improvement in their play each week was very evident. The Tornadoes went from strength to strength, winning a semi-final before going down in a hard fought preliminary final. Thank you to the coaches, managers and other helpers who helped make the season a success.

Mid Season Hockey Reports – June 2007

Under 13 Division 2 Grammar Tornadoes

After a shaky first game, the Tonadoes have had a very good start to the season. The team has begun to come together very well and their skills are developing 100 percent

Our defense, Romy, Eva, Bonnie, Lucy, Kate and Caitlin have been working hard every game to keep that ball out of the goal. These defenders work hard to get it out of the circle and to our attackers.

The hard working forwards Ellie, Karuna, Hannah G, Hannah, Annabelle, Mya and Imogen pass the ball well between themselves to get the ball in the circle. Many of our goals this season have come from runaway attack where these players work like a team down the field, linking up and shooting!

After only playing half a season, the girls are already in contention for the finals. Keep it up girls, work hard, practice and we will get there! Well Done!

Under 11 Division 2 Grammar Hurricanes

At the beginning of Term 2, an enthusiastic team of Year 3 students took to the field in their brand new Canberra Girls’ Grammar hockey uniforms, sticks, boots and mouthguards to play, for many of them, their first game of hockey on a full field.  There was so much to learn, for example, to stay in the position the coach asked one to play; to stop the ball before trying to hit it and not to tackle one’s own team.

There is always encouragement in spades from the sidelines as parents barrack for the players, some learning the game as we progress through the season, others offering wisdom on refereeing decisions to shed light on the finer points of field hockey.  After every game we see a steady improvement, the penny dropping on the aforementioned finer, and not so finer points, and the value of teamwork.

The players are enjoying their season, making new friends, cementing existing ones and finding skills and talents they did not know they had. The smiles of the players and their encouragement of one another are a credit to their resiliency, as we face teams of stronger, older and more experienced players, making the goals we have scored and wins we have had much sweeter.

Our for and against statistics do not reflect the marked improvement in the Hurricanes’ skills, teamwork and confidence. Given that only five of the students have played hockey before and none in the Under 11 age group, we are holding our own quite well. At the time of writing this report we have played seven games.  We have won one and lost six, however we have scored four goals along the way.

The team is gelling together well and their rapid rate of improvement, enthusiasm and resiliency augers well for CGGS hockey in the future.  We look forward to finishing the season with a few more wins.

Janet Carroll
Manager

Under 11 Division 1 Grammar Fireballs

After seven rounds of the ACT Under 11 girls Division 1 hockey championship the Fireballs are steadily improving the quality of their game play. All players are building their skills and knowledge of the game, and their continued commitment laying the foundations for success in the seasons ahead.

Whilst yet to win a match this should be tempered by the relative inexperience of a significant part of the team who are first year players and the teams division 1 status.

The goal of the team is to win a match by seasons end and we cannot help but think we are well on our way.

Our thanks to Antonia Mathews for her support of hockey throughout the season.

We wish both Antonia and her husband an enjoyable break travelling Europe next semester.

Manager

Junior School HockeyCGGS News 0712 Hockey

On Wednesday 2 May, six of our students (Emily Greenberg, Bonnie Andrews, Madeline Trinder, Sionna Maple, Isabella Bain and Bronte Forrester) participated in the ACT Schools Hockey Championships. Our students played really well and the competition was very close with South Canberra finishing third only one point behind the winners. Our students were a little disappointed to miss out but really enjoyed the day and it was a good run before the first games of the season.

Congratulations must go to Isabella Bain, Emily Greenberg, Sionna Maple and Madeline Trinder  who have been nominated for the training squad for the PSSA where a team will be selected to go to Adelaide in August - so fingers crossed! I would like to particularly thank Maryanne Ellem for supporting the team on the day and giving encouragement to all the students.

Madeline Trinder and Sionna Maple were also selected in the U11 Gold and U13 girls regional teams and are participating in a number of carnivals. These carnivals are held in Campbelltown, Crookwell, Goulburn and Canberra on the June Long Weekend (9 to 11 June) at the National Hockey Centre, Lyneham.
