The 2009 ACT Senior School Singles Tennis Event was held during the last week of February. Ten students from CGGS registered to play, nine in the Open Girls division, and one in the U15 Girls division: Anushka Sandanam and Jess King from Year 12; Genevieve Hooke and Georgia Collis from Year 11; Soumya Jyoti, Jennifer Walsh, Olivia Collins, Tess Aungles and Shannon Taylor from Year 10; and Candace Kwong from Year 9.

The competition was fierce, and over the course of the first day, all but one of our players was eliminated from the main event, although they then all played in the consolation rounds. When rain stopped play for the day, Candace Kwong, fourth seed in the Open Girls division, remained undefeated, whilst Tess Aungles still needed to finish her consolation quarter final qualifier and Jennifer Walsh had qualified for the consolation quarter final.

Despite valiant efforts from Tess, Candace and Jennifer during the morning of the second day, only Jennifer was left in the competition by mid-morning. She won her quarter final 6-0, her semi-final 9-7 (a marathon in the heat of the day!), ultimately winning the consolation final 6-3, 6-3 and finishing the day with the trophy. She was terrific to watch; just when it looked like she had nothing left to give, she'd pull another burst of energy from somewhere and get the ball back over the net.

All the girls involved behaved magnificently and played with enthusiasm and great sportsmanship.

SunSmart Singles Tennis Competition

On Tuesday 15 May, nine of our students (Jessie Andrikis, Nicola Agnew, Isabella Bain, Lucinda Bain, Karuna Henderson, Niki Johnson, Georgie Koundouris, Brooke Newham and Ellen Sanderson) participated in the SunSmart Singles Tennis Competition at the Empower Dome, Fadden. The students showed great sportsmanship and supported each other through the whole competition. Two of these students Isabella Bain and Georgie Koundouris, made it through to the finals held on Thursday 17 May at the National Tennis Centre, Lyneham. I would like to thank Jenny Sanderson for managing and supporting the team on the day and for providing us with some images of the students.

ACT Secondary Schools Singles Tennis Tournament

On 26 February 2007 six aspiring tennis stars represented CGGS at the ACT Secondary Schools Singles Tennis Tournament. Students from secondary schools and colleges all over the ACT came together for three days of green and white (and brown in the case of the clay courts). Tess Aungles, Carley Willis, Angharad Llewellyn, Nicole White, Candace Kwong and Jennifer Walsh were models of good sportsmanship and matched the competition in a pool of skilled tennis practitioners.

Angharad Llewellyn and Nicole White played valiant first round matches but were, unfortunately, knocked out early in the day. Progressing through to the second and third rounds with relative ease, Tess Aungles, Carley Willis, Jennifer Walsh and Candace Kwong played some brilliant tennis to stay in the competition. CGGS dominated in the quarter finals; three of the eight quarter finalists were Grammarians. Carley Willis played a tough first-to-nine-games set, losing 9-3. Jennifer Walsh breezed through her quarter final match 9-0, and Candace Kwong - our sole Year 7 representative - put on a similarly impressive show also winning 9-0. The day ended with semi final matches, and while both Jennifer and Candace played some more fantastic tennis, the semi finals saw both our remaining players knocked out. Jennifer and Candace both showed tremendous focus and determination in their semi final matches. The girls supported and encouraged each other during each of their matches, and displayed a high level of sportsmanship throughout the entirety of the day. Well done to all of the girls, and keep up the training for next year’s tournament!
