SENIOR
On Wednesday 4 September, 5K had a Soccer Carnival held by the ‘A’ team (a group of Year 10 Sport Science students). 5K were spilt into four groups, these groups then rotated through a circuit with games that cover basic soccer skills. These games were: Coach Serves - a ball is passed into the middle and then a one on one game commences; Protect and Pounce – players protect their ball while trying to knock other players balls out; Ten Pin Bowling: players try to knock down ten cones; and Through the Gate: players try to pass a soccer ball through a set of cones. After learning these skills, 5K students put them into practise with a 12 versus 12 soccer game. Although neither team won the game, the focus was on having fun.
We would like to thank the sponsors of the Carnival, ACT Health and the Cancer Council who provided goods for the sponsorship packs which were given to the students. Thanks to Mother Nature for providing fruit for the students to snack on throughout the Carnival.
We also like to thank 5K, for their participation and wiliness to learn. We hope that the day was as fun for them as it was for us.

HUMAN MOVEMENT STUDIES
This week, Year 12 Human Movement, as part of our Sports Psychology unit on attentional focus and mental rehearsal, participated in a Body Balance class at Fitness First. This was led by our very own Ash Feltham (12D). Ash has completed her Fitness Leader qualifications this year and has been practising her skills at various fitness clubs around Canberra. During class time we have been discussing the important role psychology plays in sports performance. How athletes think, feel and behave has a dramatic impact of the success of our sporting elite.

School Girls Morning Tea
Last Friday, the Year 8 PDHPE class was fortunate to attend the School Girls Morning Tea. The class had the opportunity to listen to inspiring female athletes such as: Jodie Henry – Swimmer, Abby Bishop – Basketball, Sarah Corrigan – Rugby Referee and Caroline Buchanan – BMX Rider.

There were also various female role models on each of their tables and the students were able to talk with these athletes and find out more about them on a personal level.

YEAR 10 SPORTS SCIENCE
On Wednesday 7 September, a group of students from Mr Kelley’s Year 10 Sports Science class went to the Junior School to run the organised event of a Soccer Carnival and Clinic. The students involved were Mrs Foster’s Year 5 class. All the students had an enjoyable time, playing two games each and had to settle a three way tie with a relay race. This was all topped off with a yummy sausage sizzle. This special day could not have been made possible without the help of our sponsors; Coles Curtin, Regional Fruit Suppliers, Canberra Clothing Association, our teacher, Mr Kelley, and of course, our special Year 5 buddies. We hope they take the soccer skills and teamwork they learnt on the day and use them in their different sports, in the classroom and outside of school in the wider Canberra community.

ASC Athletics Carnival 2007
During the last semester break the Australian Institute of Sport informed the school that the AIS Athletics Track resurfacing will be delayed until early October. You may now be aware that because of this delay, the date for our House Athletics Carnival has been rescheduled to Wednesday 17 October, Week 1 Term 4.
The AIS track delay has also affected the venue for the Associated Southern Colleges (ASC) Athletics Carnival on Thursday 27 September. This year, the School’s ASC obligation is to assist the organisation of the ASC Athletics Carnival. The School attempted to negotiate a change of date; however, as this date is fixed on the ASC calendar and affects all ASC schools, the date will need to remain the same and an alternate venue has now been confirmed at Charnwood Playing Fields.
Consequently, the date of the ASC Carnival at the end of Term 3 will now be held before our scheduled House Athletics Carnival in the first week of Term 4. Because of this we will not have the opportunity to use our House athletics results as part of our ASC selections this year.
Under these difficult circumstances, the School has organised a contingency plan to ensure we send our best athletics team to the ASC Carnival. The team will be largely based on our 2006 ASC team, using our House athletics results from 2006. We have also been able to consider some Year 6 results from the 2006 Southside Athletics Carnival and our 2007 Cross Country results for some endurance events.
The following additional invitations will be conducted:
- Current Year 7 students and any new students will have the opportunity to time trial for 100m track events during Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes in Week 7
- Current Year 7 and new students will also be able to submit times, distances or heights for consideration in other track and field events to Mr Griffiths by Thursday 20 September.
The ASC athletics team will be confirmed by email to students in the coming weeks.
The ACTSSSA Carnival remains scheduled for Week 4 Term 4, 8 November at the AIS Athletics track.
Students should see Mr Griffiths for any further questions regarding selections for the ASC Carnival. Students interested in hurdle events at the ACTSSSA Carnival may submit times as usual to Mr Griffiths.
Should you have any queries regarding these details please contact us on: (02) 6202 6449.

Surf Trip Report 2006
On 5 December, Year 9 Sports Science classes finally go to go on our much wanted surf trip. With a 9am departure, we were all revved and ready to go!
The two and a half hour bus trip was quiet and relaxing with a movie playing and everyone catching-up on the weekend’s gossip. After our quick stop at Braidwood for a play on the much favoured playground and toilet stop we were eager to get there.
When we finally reached the beach, not many of us were keen as the weather turned on us. But our fun loving teachers and instructors kept us motivated and the weather stayed sunny for us. After splitting into two groups the first got their wetsuits on, grabbed surfboards and went straight down to the sand to start practising before getting in the water. We learnt the four steps that consisted ‘paddle’, ‘up on hand and toes’, ‘squat’ and ‘jump up’. As soon as we became professionals at that, in we went. Thanks to our awesome instructors and teachers, after about two hours of getting dunked or nose diving, the majority of us could stand up and catch a wave.
After a quick bite to eat, the groups swapped over. We walked to the top of the cliff to learn how to spot rips and save ourselves in them. We all thought it was interesting but the next thing we knew we were walking along the beach just about to get ourselves caught in one. It was challenging for some of us but we managed to get ourselves in and out of it. After that our fun had to come to and end so back on the bus we went. We got home just in time for a quick shower and lovely dinner from the Boarding Hose and then we went straight to Speech Night.
Thank you to Mrs Harrison, Mrs Dixon and Mr Griffiths - we could not have done it with out them.
