Basketball Winners - Sue Geh Cup

On Thursday 23 October, Jessica Vials, Eden Milne, Sophie Clarke, Grace Woonton, Alana Dalgleish, Hannah Blewitt-Gray, Joanna Chalker, Taylia Sarris, Olivia Simpson and I played in the Sue Geh Cup at the Tuggeranong Basketball Stadium in the Year 5/6 competition.

Sue Geh was a local Canberra woman who was about seven feet tall. She played with the Australian Institute of Sport and with the Australian opals in the 1980s. Due to a heart condition she passed away in her early thirties. As a mark of respect, Basketball Canberra named the competition after her.

We played four games against St Francis Assisi, Monash, Charles Conder and Curtin winning all four games. We then played in the grand final against St Clares Assisi which we also won. By winning the Southside competition we now play the winner of the Northside competition which is Burgmann as an opener to the Canberra Capitals game on 15 November - so please come along and support us.

We all had a wonderful time and would love to do it again. This is what some of the players had to say about the day:

Today was very exhilarating, I had fun playing in a team with my friends”.

“I really enjoyed today and would love to do it again. Thanks to our coach Shauna Lodding and all the parents who came along. Their help made the day even more enjoyable for all the girls who participated”.

We would all thank Shauna Lodding for giving up her time to coach us.

Junior School Grammar Blue – Basketball

The Grammar Blue basketball team has had a great year and we were very lucky because we played in the basketball Grand Final last Saturday. We had all practised a lot!

Even though we lost we had a lot of fun and played as a team and that is all that matters to us.

After the game we were screaming like mad because we were so happy with ourselves just to get to play in the grand final.  All the players in Grammar Blue never thought we would get that far!

Thanks to Lucy and Katrina, our coaches, and also to our manager Bev Turner and to our sports teachers.  We had a great season!

Senior School Basketball - Sunflowers win shoot out at Belconnen

The touring Japanese Jomo Sunflowers concluded their tour of Australia with an entertaining 107-101 over a Canberra Invitational line-up at Belconnen Stadium. The invitation team contained Lauren Simpson (12D).

Canberra’s team included four of this year’s new look Capitals side and a selection of local ABA and U20 players and accordingly was happy to try and outrun the always up-tempo visiting side. Jomo Sunflowers 107 (Hiromi Suwa 28, Rika Tanaka 13, Ryoko Utsumi 14, Akane Nihara 10) defeated  Canberra Invitational Women 101 (Jess Bibby 33, Michelle Musselwhite 29, Chantella Perera 15, Nicki Graham 7, Nat Hurst 5, Kristen Langhorn 3, Lauren Simpson 3, Jes Wheeler 3, Ella Ward 3)

Basketball News - Junior School

The new Summer Basketball competition has completed the first three rounds.  The Schools’ Basketball program continues to improve in both quality and quantity. We have a total of nine teams playing in competitions that are played over weekends for the next 2 terms. This includes teams playing in the higher standard Premier League, to players that are new to the game. This is the largest number of players we have entered and is a great tribute to the quality of the training program offered. A huge thank you to Mel Dalgleish and the large number of parents that volunteer their time and expertise to make this program such a success.

Our training program focusing on fun, participation and skill development continues each Monday, and I’m sure that we will see great improvements throughout the season.

A big thank you to all players, coaches and parents and we wish all teams success for the season.

It has been another positive and successful season for our Basketball Club with five teams competing from the Junior School. All players and teams demonstrated great improvement and we thank all coaches and managers for their continued support throughout the season.

Senior School

Congratulations to all students who participated in the 2007 Championship season. We had a total of 17 teams, 8 of which managed to make it into the playoff series. This is a fantastic achievement and sets us up on a great platform for the upcoming seasons.

Below is a photo is of our U16 Div 2 team who played their final game on Sunday. I would like to thank all the parents and coaches who support our program. Without their help we would not be able to have so many students involved.
