YEAR 1 NEWS

What a busy end to the term! Year 1 students have been working very hard in Maths to learn about money. They learnt that money is used to buy food and other things that we need or want. They used the Interactive Whiteboards to identify coins and notes and to make amounts. Many children still find money a difficult concept, so it is important for them to count and play with money at home or at the shops. Year 1 students present weekly news to their classes on a given topic. This week the children were asked to make an object that flies. Children have made paper aeroplanes, helicopters and balloons. All the Year 1 students are getting better at speaking in front of their peers with a loud, clear voice. We look forward to another busy and exciting term after the holidays. Enjoy the break!

Autumn is here, although it does feel more like the middle of summer. The trees are turning and crispy mornings will soon be upon us. Year 1 students created some stunning autumn artwork using the techniques of sponging and tearing. Using small sponges and paint, the background was created then left to dry. The students tore tissue paper to create the tree and leaves. Come for an autumn walk amongst the trees in the Year 1 classrooms.

It was a pleasure to welcome the Year 1 students back to school last week! It has also been nice to meet our new students Adam, Kiele, Lena and Matilda. The children are settling well into their new classes, 1C and 1W, and it is wonderful to see the children adapting to new routines and making new friends. The children enjoyed playing ‘Getting to Know You’ games in their classrooms as part of the Quality Start Program run during Week 1. Favourite games included Neighbours, Name Tags and Dominoes. Year 1 also spent time thinking about why we come to school and what behaviours help to make school a great place to be. We are looking forward to seeing many Year 1 parents at the Curriculum Information Evening to be held at 7pm on 18 February. We will use this opportunity to discuss general housekeeping, Year 1 curriculum, homework routines as well as the introduction of the Primary Years Program (PYP).
