JUNIOR SCHOOL FRENCH

Posted CGGS Newsletter No. 20 - 25 July 2008

On Tuesday of this week, the French puppet group, Carrousel Theatre were here to present their bi-lingual play Sinbad and the Enchanted Horse to Prep to Year 3. The students thoroughly enjoyed being able to interact with the puppeteers in French and asked quite a lot of questions at the end of the play about the making of the puppets.

During Week 1 of each term, the French lessons are held in the Computer Lab where previous topics are revised and new vocabulary introduced through language games. The students are also typing up some work that will be shown at their Learning Journey, later in the term.

This term Year 6 students will be starting their Le Café unit of listening activities, leading on to the play they will write and perform about ordering food and drinks. The Year 5 students are just about ready to present their in-class project on ANZACs in France in WW1.

The Year 4 students are just finishing their Animals unit and will start work on The Body vocabulary, where they will be able to say that they have a pain in a specific part of the body.

The Year 3 students will continue with their major unit on The Family. Year 3 and Year 4 both have a project for this term. The information will be given out in the next few weeks.

The Year 2 students will be working on Australian Animals and then Clothes, while Prep and Year 1 will look at Winter Activities and Winter Clothes.

This year the French Room is located upstairs next to Year 4 and Reading Recovery. Again we have a very special room full of posters, vocabulary and souvenirs.

Years 3 to 6 students are organised into table groups of Vert, Rouge, Bleu et Jaune. French readers, flashcards and Bingo, Scrabble and Guess Who? games will help with vocabulary development and oral practice.

Week 1 for Years 4 to 6 students were spent in revision mode so that in Week 2 the students could take over the Computer Lab to type up the C’est Moi! information passages about themselves. Everyone was thrilled to be able to put in their French accents on the computer and the final results looked great.

All the new students seem to have settled in well to their French lessons and are in the process of learning basic vocabulary for greetings, colours, numbers, school items etc as well as participating in the oral sessions for their class and seeing what the rest of the class is doing.

The Extension French lessons started this week with the Years 3/4 group planning to look at the topics of The Environment and Space while the Year 5/6 group, with the help of Ms Sharon Callahan, will look at a unit about travelling to France called Bon Voyage.
