VERONICA TAMSITT - CLASS OF 2007
CGGS congratulates Veronica Tamsitt (12W) who has recently been awarded a full sports scholarship to the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. Veronica was spotted by the University’s Men’s Rowing Coach whilst competing at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Beijing earlier this year.
"I received a letter out of the blue three weeks ago advising me that the University would be very interested in having me study and row for them and could probably offer me a scholarship. Since then I have accepted an offer of a full sports scholarship" said Veronica.
The scholarship is worth USD 33,000 per annum for four years which includes tuition, board, meals, books and fees In addition, all regatta travel, athlete support, training gear Bob Ernst and sports medicine is covered.
"I plan to travel to Seattle in September 2008 for the beginning of the academic year. I haven’t decided yet exactly what I want to study but I have narrowed it down to either Bioengineering or Oceanography. I am very excited to be going to the University of Washington because it has one of the best collegiate rowing programs in the USA and I will receive numerous opportunities to travel around the USA and overseas to compete".
Head Coach at the University of Washington, Bob Ernst, is a highly awarded coach with over thirty years experience, including ten years as coach of the US national team including an Olympic gold medal winning Women’s VIII.
The opportunity to row with what is acknowledged as the pre-eminent women’s rowing university in the US is the chance of a lifetime. As one of 800 student athletes, Veronica will be a central player in what is known as the Huskies Crew.
Academically, the University of Washington is ranked very highly amongst public universities with 93% of freshers graduating in the top 25% of their high school class. The University has specialities in chemical and bioengineering and marine science/oceanography, all of which are of interest to Veronica. Veronica intends to complete a four year undergraduate degree at the University of Washington and will then decide what to do from there.
Veronica had already been offered a combined scholarship by the University of Sydney Sport and St Andrew’s College and is short listed for a University of Sydney Scholarship and a Chemical Engineering scholarship. She will now withdraw from everything except her UAC/Elite Athlete Points and the University of Sydney scholarship, both of which are deferrable.
Veronica will remain in Canberra until mid next year, rowing with the Academy of Sport on Scholarship in a Junior Four, whilst vying for national selection to row at the Junior Worlds Champsions in Linz, Austria in July 2008. She will continue to be free to row for Australia from June to September each year if Rowing Australia selects her. |
