Lost Property – Year 8 Camp

A Year 8 student lost a plastic bag containing clothes while at camp. Please contact the Year 8 camp coordinator, Brad Griffiths, t: 6202 6496, if you have found clothing that does not belong to your daughter which she may have accidentally picked up.

Year 8 Camp

Year 8 recently travelled to Jindabyne for four days of activities with Action Learning Initiatives (ALI). In consultation with ALI, the School has developed a more rigorous Year 8 Program which is designed to adequately prepare students for the Year 9 Outward Bound Course. This new program included an extra night of camping, the need for students to carry packs for the duration of the camp and a decline in the number of modern bathroom conveniences available to students!

The weather was most kind to us, and apart from a few drops of rain on Thursday night, the only time participants got wet was when they capsized their canoes! Whilst canoeing was a particular favourite, the students enjoyed activities such as mountain biking, archery, camping and hiking. A number of Houses were fortunate enough to see some of the wild brumbies that inhabit the Snowy Mountains.

I must make special mention to the teachers who gave up their time to spend a busy week with the Year 8 students. Staff were most helpful and extremely positive about the conduct and enthusiasm of all participants. Finally, all students are to be congratulated on their participation throughout the week. I’m sure they felt challenged at times but are now better equipped to deal with the Year 9 Outward Bound experience.

2007 Camp Notice

Year 8 Students were given a briefing by Action Learning Initiatives’ (ALI) Director, Andrew Brown, on Tuesday, 20 February regarding expectations and requirements for Year 8 Camp. All students were issued with an updated program and equipment list. Any student without a program should contact me. I would ask that you look over these lists very carefully and emphasise the importance of packing lightly as students will be responsible for carrying all of their own gear. There have been a number of changes made to the Year 8 Camp schedule since the mail-out was issued in mid February. These changes are detailed below:

  1. The cost of the Camp is approximately $475. The final amount is dependent on the number of students who attend the camp. As stated in the letter, a staggered payment plan has been arranged.
  2. There will be no abseiling activity. This camp has been designed to aid in the preparation of all students for Year 9 Camp. The decision to alter the abseiling activity to a Camp Craft session was not an easy one. Both ALI and the School feel that the content of the Camp Craft session is vital for the students’ development in outdoor education.
  3. As stated in the letter, all students will be provided with identical packs. The School will issue these on the Thursday before Camp and I would encourage all students to pack their own packs a number of times and get used to the feel of this particular piece of equipment. Each student will be carrying her pack on a hike through Kosciusko National Park. Students will be given the opportunity to lighten their packs prior to the hike, however, the weight of the packs will still be approximately 10 kg. ALI staff will be on hand to ensure that each student has her pack fitted correctly.
  4. Buses will now be arriving back at School on Friday, 16 March at approximately 4:30pm. This has changed from the original arrival time of 6:00 pm. Please ensure that arrangements have been made for the collection of your daughter.

If all students could return their permission form as soon as possible to their tutor, I would appreciate it. I am certainly looking forward to the 2007 Year 8 Camp and believe that it will be both challenging and rewarding for all participants. If you have any further questions, please contact me on 6202 6496 or email brad.griffiths@cggs.act.edu.au
