Australian Mathematics Competition 2008

The results of this year’s Australian Mathematics Competition have arrived and the Awards for 2008 saw 66% of our students who sat the competition gain either a Credit or better.

The Australian Mathematics Competition is an activity of the Australian Mathematics Trust and this year hundreds of thousands of students participated from 42 countries.  This year saw the introduction of a Proficiency Certificate in Mathematical Skills and Problem Solving, seen as an excellent complement to the Australian Government numeracy tests. The students have all received their certificates and feedback sheets.

Our school results for the 319 entries were as follows:

  • 1 Prize
  • 6 High Distinctions
  • 61 Distinctions
  • 144 Credits
  • 40 Proficiency

Congratulations to Ainsley Davies of Year 8 who was awarded a prize [top 0.3%] and to Georgia Antonopoulos of Year 8 for the School’s Prudence Award (highest number of consecutive correct responses- 15!).  Ainsley received her prize at a presentation at ANU in September.

Congratulations to all those girls who received certificates and for all the students who worked diligently during the competition to solve those 30 questions.  Many thanks go to the Mathematics staff for their efforts in training and encouraging the students.

ANU Maths Day 2008

Every year a Maths Day is held for students in Year 12 from schools in the ACT and regional NSW. It is an opportunity for schools to send five of their best mathematicians to compete with teams of students from other schools in a series of challenging but fun activities. This year the CGGS team consisted of Megan Blom (team captain), Elodie Cheesman, Nisha Prabaharan, Elizabeth Wilson and Julia Zhu.They had a great day, working very well together and mixing with students from other schools.

SENIOR SCHOOL MATHS NEWS - Y7/8 FINANCIAL LITERACY

The following play on financial literacy will be seen by all Year 7 and Year 8 students in the Pastoral Care session on Thursday 10 April.

CENT$ATIONAL HARRY AND THE BALANCE OF LIFE

A play based on the new National Financial Literacy Framework

This play is commissioned by Ethical Investor and sponsored by Bank of Queensland. The story tells of Harry, a colourful Ocker character, who embarks on a quest to discover a rare and valuable commodity in order to save the lives of his two very special friends.

Harry learns he must master the responsible use of a credit card, mobile phones, seductive advertising, balancing a budget, distinguishing wants from needs and scale the ‘seven sensational steps to success’.

He realises that achieving his goals not only involves risks and competitive drive, but also includes trust, teamwork, co-operation, caring and sharing.

The balance Harry achieves in the world of money parallels his own emotional and physical journey.

Price: $6.00 per student or $10.00 per family

Classes

Classes in Years 8 to 10 are streamed within three broad levels: Level 1[an advanced level ]; Level 2 [an intermediate level]; and Level 3 [ a support class].  All students have a text book appropriate to their level of study.  In Year 7 Maths, all classes are following the same content with extension and support provided as necessary.

Year 7 incursion

All Year 7 students will participate in a problem solving session with WORLD OF MATHS on Monday 3 March in the School Hall.  The girls will rotate through in House groups, taking 1.5 hours to solve a variety of problems using large hands-on displays and puzzles.  Problem solving is an important part of all topics throughout the Mathematics curriculum.  The display caters for all abilities and shows applications of mathematics to real life situations, as well as being a lot of fun!

Mathletics

We have re-negotiated with the Mathletics Company to once again provide a web- based Mathematics support package to all our students.  The price for 2008 is $22 per student for the Mathletics site [for Years 9 to 11] and a combined price of $30 for the Mathletics and Spelling sites [for Years 7 and 8]. Students can obtain their new passwords from their teachers.  Teachers will set tasks to match the current class work; set revision and set catch up work should a student fall behind in a topic.  We would encourage all parents to permit access to this valuable site again for 2008.

Maths Club

This club will run every second Thursday in D2 at lunchtime, starting in week 6.  It is a valuable opportunity for students in Years 7 to 10 to enjoy problem solving and seek help with the Problem of the Week.  It will also provide an opportunity for students who wish to participate in the Challenge Stage of the Maths Challenge for Young Australians.  This is a shorter three week problem solving competition.  Any interested student should contact Margaret Jordan on the Mathematics staff.

Enrichment

The Maths Challenge Enrichment Stage will be offered as follows:

  • Mr Egan’s Year 7 Maths [Dirichlet Challenge]
  • Mrs Hyslop’s Year 8 [ Euler Challenge]
  • selected students in Year 9 [Gauss Challenge].

These well designed challenges allow students six months to solve a variety of problems with supporting material provided.  Participating students will be allocated class time to work on the questions and the support will be provided by teachers.

Tutorials

The Mathematics Faculty offers weekly tutorials to assist students with test preparation or with areas of concern. They are one hour long and are held in room B8.The timetable for Semester 1 is posted in all Mathematics classrooms.
