Year 2 students have enthusiastically arrived back for Term 4 and are ready for a busy time ahead. This term we are working on a Science Unit of Inquiry called Sounds Sensational. In this unit we will investigate how sound is made, some of the uses of sound, what materials sound travels through and how we hear sound. This week we have discussed what we think we already know about sound and also what we would like to learn through this unit. Our investigation will involve exploring sound at home and at school, and We can foresee some fun and interesting experiments ahead!

In Mathematics we are continuing to work on the problem solving skills that we began to dvelop at the end of Term 3. This has involved participating in a number of mathematic games that really stretch our brains and require us to not only ask and solve open and closed questions, but also to explain how we reached our answer. It is interesting to watch how the students have approached the different activities. Many have found it quite frustrating when trying to work out what the mystery number is or how to navigate a path using very specific directions. Once worked out the students are extremely proud of themselves!

What a bunch of Fruitcakes!

The Junior School was agog on Wednesday 13 August as 64 life sized pieces of fruit, vegetables and healthy foods walked into the School. Yes, we all dressed up as our favourite healthy food for the day and partook in healthy activities as part of the Year 2 Primary Years Program (PYP) unit of inquiry on healthy food. During the unit, in association with the PDHPE Department, the students have been learning all about the healthy food pyramid, beneficial exercise and creating and eating well balanced meals. The students have examined their own lifestyles as well as interviewing their family and friends. On the day, there were carrots, strawberries, spaghetti, mangos, dragon fruit, a sandwich, milk, and even a six foot cow in the shape of Mr Bacon. It was a spectacular spectacle. During the day the children took part in healthy activities in the form of sport on the oval with Mr Moo (Bacon), games on the tennis courts with the sweetest birthday strawberry (Miss McNally) and cooking scrumptious fried rice with the carrot (Ms Holliday) and the grapes (Mrs Walker). Everyone had a great day and the rest of the School enjoyed watching us. It was a fun activity as part of our PYP studies. So even though we are pretty smart in Year 2 on this day we were all a bit fruity (sorry, no nuts).

Year 2 students have enthusiastically arrived back for Term 3 ready for a busy time ahead.  We are beginning this term with a new unit of inquiry in conjunction with the PE department about living healthy and well-balanced lives. The students will look at their own lifestyles and reflect upon how they are healthy. They will also interview someone outside of school to find out if people of different ages have different ideas about what makes a healthy lifestyle.

We started the unit by having a picnic that involved trying different types of foods from the different healthy eating food groups. We had a lot of fun experimenting with food combinations, for example having a fruit kebab dipped in yoghurt. This was a great way to start our new unit.

In our ‘Show and Tell’ we have discussed how we live a healthy and well-balanced life and it has been interesting to hear the different ways our classmates do this. It has also been fun to participate in the Minister’s Physical Activity Challenge as we have been able to see how much exercise we actually do each week.

CGS/CGGS EXCHANGE

On a rainy Tuesday 10 June, Year 2 participated in the CGS/CGGS Exchange. Students from CGS Northside and Southside came to CGGS for a morning of construction activities. The students were put into groups with either boys or girls and a mix of CGGS and CGS students.

Mrs David first taught everyone a song, in the Hall, about ‘a bear and Archie’ which was great fun. After singing, the boys’ groups went into the Year 2 and 1C classrooms to have some construction competitions. Two groups had a competition to build the tallest tower out of either straws or newspaper and the other two groups, using the same materials, competed to build bridges that could hold the most weight. Meanwhile, the girls did construction using our new construction equipment in the other Junior Primary classrooms. The groups were then able to swap and the girls built while the boys did construction.

All groups showed great cooperation in building and everyone had a chance to get to know people from the other schools. After the constructions were judged and the winners announced we had lunch. Due to the weather, the boys ate in the Hall then played Dodge Ball while the girls ate and played in the classroom. Mr Bacon was having as much fun as the boys playing Dodge Ball. After the girls played Dodge Ball in the Hall, it was time to go. We gathered to say goodbye and CGS left. We all had a lovely time, met lots of new people and learnt how strong masking tape, newspaper and straws could be. We look forward to the next CGS/CGGS Exchange later in the year when we will visit CGS.

What a start to Term 2!

All the students have returned and hard at work. It has been wonderful to watch how enthusiastic and dedicated they have been to their learning.

This term we are starting a new unit on Transport. We are looking at how it has changed through time by creating timelines, how different communities use transport and the impact the environment has on transport. To begin our unit we went on an excursion to Regatta Point and the National Library of Australia to look at pictorial displays that show how transport has changed in Australia. We then came back to school and created some amazing types of transport that we believe are going to be used in the future.

Within the classroom we are working on a number of tasks and investigations in small groups. On different occasions we have a leader of the group who helps guide the conversation, encourages all members of the group to contribute and allocates tasks. One activity we are all looking forward to is creating a community through the use of construction materials that show how transport is being used.

Congratulations must go out to all of the Year 2 students who participated in the Cross Country Carnival. This is a special event for us to be involved in and it was wonderful to watch all of the students try their best and complete the challenging course. We all had a lot of fun and were very tired when we returned!

Last week, Year 2 participated in the Athletics Carnival which was great fun. Year 2 went for the morning and competed in two races and a tug-of-war. The boys' 70m running race was fast and furious followed by the girls race which was run with grace and style. All students participated in the tug-of-war with many parents and teachers cheering them on. Year 2 was at the Carnival until recess and everyone had a wonderful day.

Year 2 has been learning all about water. Each class has done experiments with water in our environment at school and at home. We have learnt all about rain and how we use it to get water to our homes and dams. We’ve also been doing water poetry in the Library and water art which adorns each classroom wall, including raindrops made by doing Iris folding.

In Maths we’ve learnt how to multiply and are beginning to know our two times tables. We also know how to make halves and quarters so next time you have pizza for dinner your child can help you cut it!

Year 2 is having a fun filled time and we can’t wait to show you the photos from our Easter Hat Parade.

We would like to welcome all of our students and their families to Year 2. We are very pleased with the way the students have settled into their new classes. They have been working very hard and we look forward to a busy and exciting year.

During Term 1 we will be focusing our Life Skills Program on the theme of Independence. This is a very important area for all Year 2 students, where they will work at becoming more responsible for their possessions, behaviour and school work. We encourage parents to work on this area at home to coincide with what we are doing in the classroom and hope that the culmination of this unit will be the exciting sleepover planned for later in the term.

Accompanying our Literacy Groups, where in Term 1 and 2 we will be focusing on fiction books and analysing the structure and content, we will also be completing a literacy study on the book Tashi. By the end of term you will have heard a lot about Tashi as he is a fun, adventurous and interesting character that the students come to love. As we read through this book we complete a number of activities that enhances our comprehension of the book and will hopefully encourage us to read more books like this.

During Term 1 our Science Unit is Water Works. The students, through investigation, will explore how water is used, where water comes from and how to use it responsibly. There will be some activities that the students will complete at home, for example, investigating how water is used throughout their household. This week we have been on a ‘water walk around the Junior School to find places where water is being used and what it is being used for.

We hope that Year 2 is a positive, exciting and interesting learning experience in 2007 and we encourage you to please come and speak to us if there are any issues you wish to raise.
