Senior School Soccer 2009
Soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. CGGS is no exception, fielding nine teams in 2008, up from four the year before and with probably more next year.
We are looking for parents and friends to assist with the organisation of the 2009 season, ie with kit, equipment, IT, team management, coaching, player registration, referee scheduling and payment, weekly results reporting, presentation night organisation etc.
If you are interested in helping for the 2009 season, then we would like to hear from you. Parents and friends are invited to a meeting to plan for an even bigger and better season next year. The meeting will be held at 5.30pm Wednesday 19 November in the Gym classroom. If you have any queries please contact Jenny Hunter, Co-curricular Sports Coordinator on 6202 6496 or Phil Aungles on 6285 2270.
We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you there on 19 November.

END OF SEASON JUNIOR SCHOOL SOCCER REPORTS
CGGS U7 Joeys

It was another great end to an enjoyable soccer season for the U7 Joeys team. The players all put a big effort into improving their ball skills and moving the ball into play. The Joeys showed their commitment to the sport by working hard at all the training sessions and doing their personal best at every match ...even on those freezing cold mornings.
The Joeys were competitive amongst the other U7 players in the competition and a big improvement could be seen this year. Every player had good contact with the ball at each match.
Thanks to the players for making such a big contribution this year and to all the parents who supported the players throughout the season.
Georgia Braggett, Philippa Clark, Mel Clery, Sarah Hutchinson, Evelyn Perry, Carla Sanfrancesco
U7Joeys Team
CGGS U8 Spitfires

The Mighty U8 Spitfires soccer team made up of Mohammad Javaid, Alexander August, Jan Bock, David Hall, Edwin Hur-Thompson and Jake Schmank, wrapped up their season on a very high note in a friendly scrimmage against the other U8 CGGS Mustang team on Father's Day. They succeeded in accomplishing a season long goal of making 10 goals in a game which means that Coach William Hall will be shaving his head - much to the delight of the boys. We still need to set the time and place for the hair cut!
Another high point for the season has been watching the team grow as individual players as well as seeing them grow as a team. They have learned to play as a team, moving the ball and passing the ball up to each other to set up goals. The season has seen every player score at least one goal and many of the players have scored multiple goals in a game! Congratulations Spitfires!
We are proud of the Spitfires and proud of how much they have learnt this season. They are all looking forward to playing soccer again in the Summer season!

The Mustangs
I have really enjoyed playing soccer this season for the Mustangs. We have won a lot of games, learnt lots of new skills and had a lot of fun too. Training on Tuesday nights was sometimes hard when it was cold and dark but we loved the games we played to learn new soccer skills. My favourite was Cops and Robbers.
Everyone looked forward to the matches on Saturday when we always played well. One match we even lost count of how many goals we scored!
By the end of the season we were all very good at passing the ball and had found out which were our best positions. Alex Belford and I were defenders, Bader Al-Nibari was centre forward, Luca Hehir was left wing and Yousef Al-Nibari was right wing, with Duncan Miller as superstar because he could play all of them!
I have learned that being the goal scorer isn’t the most important thing and more passes make more goals for the team. I can’t wait till next season.

CGGS U9 Dynamos

The Dynamos - Brooke Meinhart, Bella Bueno, Rachel Copping, Peta Falzon, Revati Venkatesh and Venetia Lindsay, have had an outstanding season of great fun and challenges. The majority of the team played together last season and were very happy to welcome Revati into the team this season. The Dynamos have markedly improved their ball handling, passing, and goal-scoring skills, with everyone making valuable contributions. They have grown together as a team, developing sportsmanship and the ability to effectively move the ball down the field and into the goal. Ray and Ellen Meinhart thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with this talented and energetic group of players and look forward to contributing their time next season. Congratulations Dynamos on a successful soccer season!

CGGS U10 Panthers

The U10 G soccer team finished the season on a real high, winning their last two games by three goals, thanks to the striking ability of Isobel Clark, Jemima Millar-Carton and Rebecca Dreher. The players really started to show great form by the end of the season - Maddie Barclay and Pheobe O'Connor in the mid-field; Candice Pinter, Susannah Dahlstrom and Rebecca Francis in defence and Sophie Katsanevas in goals. Special mention goes to our 'Super Sub' Laura Francis who filled in for us in all positions throughout the season. Thanks to the excellent coaching from Mrs Birchall and encouragement from Mr O'Connor (Pheobe's Dad), all the players are ready to go for the 2009 Season.
Go Panthers!

Manager
CGGS U12 White

The CGGS U12 White soccer team performed solidly this year, recording nine wins or draws out of 16 games played. The players showed very good commitment to their team, with 11 players attending at least 25 out of a possible 30 training sessions and games during the season.
The players rotated through different positions during the season (goal keeper, defender, mid fielder, attacker), allowing them to experience the game from different perspectives. A pleasing by-product of the rotation policy was that eight of the players scored at least one goal during the season, with several of the other players having near misses.
The small sided games allowed the players to have more touches of the ball, providing more opportunities to improve ball control skills and general team work. We hope the players enjoyed their season with the team and that their experience gives them the confidence to continue with soccer next season.

CGGS U12 Red

2008 was another successful year for the U12 Grammar Gazelles Red Division soccer team. The core of the team from 2007 returned to the squad and were joined by a number of new players who acquitted themselves extremely well (two of whom had never played soccer before). The team had a great year, playing 16 games, drawing two and winning all other games. The players managed to score a total of 50 goals during the season and only let in 11 from the opposition. The great thing about the 50 goals is that they were shared amongst nine of the 12 player squad, further demonstrating the team spirit in which the games were all played. The team’s tenacity and determination was tested on a number of occasions when they found themselves behind on the scoreboard but through sheer guts and superior team work they were able to snap victory from the jaws of defeat. They also became adept at giving their coaches, manager and supporters heart failure before rallying to overcome the opposition! The girl’s attitude towards the game and each other made it a pleasure for their supporters and parents to watch them each week and we look forward to another good season next year.

Mid Season Reports
U7 Joeys
The 2008 Soccer season has proven to be an exciting start for the U7 Joeys Soccer team. The players have played consistently and are good competition for their strong opponents. Despite the cold starts on Saturday mornings the players have demonstrated a keen interest in the game. Each week the Joeys are showing great improvements, both individually and as a team. They all use strategies they have learnt at training sessions and look more comfortable and confident out on the field. They show a dedication to moving the ball into space, working well together with team spirit and being good sports.
Overall the players are having a lot of fun and look forward to playing soccer each week.
U8 Tigers
The Grammar U8 Tigers play in an all-girls competition consisting of eight teams. At this age level, we play a five a side game, on a 50m by 30m field. There are no specified positions; instead all players are encouraged to run with the ball and remain close to the play (eg, no goalkeepers). The games consist of two 20 minute halves. It's been great watching the whole team put in a real effort each match, and thanks to our coaches Niki and Amy, we've also seen a noticeable development in the players' skills over the weeks. There are also all-girls competitions at the U7 and U9 age levels (four of our players played together in the U7 competition last year).
Training is after school on Monday, and games are at 9.40am on Saturday at the Mawson fields. The season is nearly half way through and our record so far is 5 wins and 2 losses.
The team is Manal Azhar, Laura Francis, Ella Matthews, Siena Scifleet, Catherine Hill and Josie Gouvoussis. Our coaches are Niki Gouvoussis and Amy Goodall, and our manager is Richard Hill. Go Tigers!
U8 Mustangs
The Under 8 Mustangs Soccer team have had a tremendous start to their season. The boys are playing well together as a team. Ben and Alex are determined to stop their opponents scoring any goals. Duncan, Yousef, Bader and Luca are all scoring plenty for the team. Most importantly, the team is having a wonderful time.
The team Mascot is Mustang. Mustang spends each week with the player of the day and is enjoying having a wonderful time supporting the boys.
Neil and Vanessa
U8 Spitfires
The U8 CGGS Spitfire Soccer team have had a great start to their season. The Spitfires are made up of six dynamic fireballs: Alexander August, our aggressive all round player ready to score or make a great save Jan Bock, the speedy player on the team who has saved many a defending goals from going in the goal just by being FAST enough to beat and stop the goal. David Hall, our talented back player who can move the ball up the field and can ‘boot’ the ball from pretty much anywhere on the field and score a goal; Edwin Hur-Thompson, part of our unrelenting offence, with nimble feet and a keen eye for his team mates Mohammad Javaid, determined and focussed on the field, Mohammad is always ready to make a swift kick; and Jake Schmank, our defensive dynamo who will move the ball up the field and into the goal when given the opening.
We have had 5 wins and 3 losses. You wouldn't know it by the score on the board, but the games the Spitfires have lost were games the boys played their best and hardest as a team. The boys are now moving the ball into space and passing the ball up the field to their team mates. They are playing very well as a team. One of the highlights of the season was winning the game against the CGS Tigers 5-3.
The one goal the team has for the season is to score 10 goals in a game and Coach William Hall, has pledged he will shave his head when this happens. The Spitfires came close in their third game scoring an amazing 9 goals, however luckily for Coach Hall, they fell short of the 10 goals they needed. All of the parents have offered to help cut the coaches hair!) Stay tuned for future pictures to see how this develops.
U9 Dynamos
The Dynamos (Brooke Meinhart, Bella Bueno, Rachel Chopping, Revati Venkatesh, Peta Falzon and Venetia Lindsay) have had an excellent season so far with all players enjoying their Saturday games. The team’s performance is improving weekly as they work at their skills during training sessions under the fun coaching of Ray and Ellen Meinhart. The players are learning to play strongly together as a team. Wins number 7 out of 8 games so far, with the only loss occurring when the team was not at full strength. We are all looking forward to continuing the season next term.
Go! Dynamos Go!
U9 Wildcats
The first half of the U9 Girls Soccer competition at Woden Valley has been wonderful. The Wildcats from CGGS have made a brilliant start, with the players continually improving and developing new skills weekly. The team consists of both experienced and beginning players all with a positive and eager attitude towards training and playing.
It is this attitude that has seen them compete in a number of impressive games with some close calls and fantastic goals. The most impressive aspects of the Wildcats game, is their continued development of team spirit and their use of positive encouragement towards other team players. It is a delight to coach and be involved in this team and they should be commended on their efforts and improvements thus far. I would also like to thank all parents for their continued support.
U10 Panthers
The U10 Panthers have had a fun season so far, with all the players improving with each game. Coached by Mrs Birchall, the team has played some challenging games and all players become more skillful with each game. We all look forward to our first game after the holidays and hope that we will be able to score more goals.
