South Care Helicopter

On Tuesday the South Care helicopter came to visit. This exciting event inspired the Prep students to write and draw about the visit. Here are some examples of their work.

Today a helicopter visited us. The helicopter had six seats. Two seats for the pilot and co-pilot. The pilot is Charlie’s dad. They gave us stickers and colouring in sheets. The other four seats are for the passengers. The helicopter colour is green and blue and white. There were lots and lots and lots and lots of buttons. My favourite part was sitting in the seats. It was really, really windy when it took off.

Penny Williamson – Prep F

This morning a helicopter visited our school. It was cool and the helicopters driver was Charlie’s dad. The helicopter landed in the middle of the oval. It was windy when the helicopter landed on our oval and when the helicopter lifted off our oval. The dust blew into our eyes when it landed on our oval. The helicopter had one propeller. My favourite bit was when we got inside the helicopter because we got to sit on the seats in the helicopter. We got to go and look in the helicopter. It was fun when the helicopter came to our school. It has things like skis. It left by lifting off the ground.

Amber Nyhof – Prep F

This morning a rescue helicopter landed on our oval. It was very windy when the helicopter landed on the oval. My favourite part was when we got to go inside the big helicopter. We got to look in with Charlie’s daddy. When we got out of the helicopter we got a colouring sheet and a sticker of the helicopter. It went in circles in the air before it landed. It landed in the middle of the oval. It had a red light on the bottom. It is there because if it was dark it will help them to see.

Emma de Somer – Prep F

On Monday morning before fruit break the Snowy Hydro helicopter came to the oval. When it landed it felt like the South Pole! All my friends thought that too. Even Mr Hall thought it as well. The blades stopped, the crew came out. We saw what they were wearing. The crew let us go in but the ELC went in first, then Prep, then Year 1 and lucky last, Year 2. We lined up. We got a colouring sheet and a sticker. We had a photo. We went to class.

Elizabeth Coper-Jones, - Prep H

On Monday morning before fruit break a Snowy Hydro helicopter came to our school oval. It flew around the oval and landed. We got to go into the Snowy Hydro helicopter. We got a sticker and a colouring sheet. We went to the front of the helicopter and took a photo and then we watched it take off. It was exciting.

Isabella Shaw – Prep H

We went to the oval to see the South Care helicopter. We sat on the steps. We watched it fly in circles around us. When it was landing it blew our hair and it was noisy. We got to walk inside it. When it was going it was noisy. They gave us a sticker and a colouring sheet.

Fatima Ahmed – Prep J

Today a helicopter visited us. It was called the South Care helicopter. I had a great time. We got to go inside the helicopter. We sat on our hats so they wouldn't blow away. The pilot was Charlie's dad from the Frog's class. It had lots of button in the cockpit. When we came out we got a sticker and a colouring sheet. It was a picture of a helicopter with eyes. It was very loud and made lots of wind.

Exchange with CGS

On Wednesday Prep classes from CGGS and CGS Southside visited Prep at Canberra Grammar School Northside. These exchanges are designed to strengthen the friendships between the students and allow an opportunity to meet new friends. Students always look forward to these days.

After arriving at CGS we had time to explore the playground. We then formed groups made up of students from all campuses and moved through a series of games and activities. It was lovely to watch friendships being both renewed and forged.

At 1.45pm sixty weary Preps boarded the bus back to school full of tales of new friends and adventures.

Learning Journeys

This week, Prep students were fortunate to have their parents visit for our Learning Journey. We spent Tuesday morning baking cupcakes to serve to our parents. We learnt about what ingredients we needed to make vanilla cupcakes and all agreed that the vanilla smell was our favourite. We then organised our books ready to show our visitors. All the class were amazed at how much progress we have made as we looked back through our books. Each of us looked hard at our work and chose two things that we were really proud of and felt that we were good at. We also decided to choose one thing that we felt we could improve.

On Wednesday we impressed our parents with our wonderful singing at Assembly and then walked our parents back to our classroom. We then had a very busy morning. We took our parents for an Art Walk to show them our wonderful works of art. We also read some books from the start of the year and from now to show our parents how our reading has improved.  We taught our Mums and Dads how to play some of our literacy games; our favourite was the one on the Interactive Whiteboard about pirates. Next came the fun part – icing our cupcakes and decorating them with sprinkles! We then went outside to eat our cupcakes and said “goodbye” to our visitors. We hope they had as much fun as we did.

What’s on in Prep this term?

Term 3 is always a very exciting term. We have planned  two units of inquiry for the students. The first is a Minibeast investigation, which the students are thoroughly enjoying. The second is a Unit of Inquiry called What’s it made of?, which involves looking at the different materials that surround us.

Much of our Literacy for the first few weeks will involve a variety of texts to help explore minibeasts. The students have already gathered a great deal information from our first two weeks.

Watch out in the classroom for minibeast artwork – new items will be appearing each week.

We are continuing our Literacy activities and have invited parents to assist us with these sessions. Students very much enjoy the opportunity to share their learning with other adults.

We will be concluding the term with a Learning Journey – a wonderful way to showcase the achievements of the students.

PREP NEWS

 Starry Starry Night

Over the course of this term, Prep have been learning about a variety of different artists. We have discovered what country each artist was born in and worked in. We talked about what each artist liked to paint and individually decided if we liked or disliked different paintings by each artist. Our favourite part was experimenting with some of the different techniques that each artist used. We created our own works of art, inspired by different artists’ artworks.   We dabbed red and white paint to create beautiful blossom artworks inspired by Claude Monet and created a pond filled with waterlilies. We made pool pictures using swirls and patterns with coloured textas, inspired by David Hockney. We created Mondrian inspired artworks on both the computer and using paper collage and decided which technique we preferred. Georges Seurat inspired us to try pointillism and we created pictures made entirely of tiny dots. Forks and paint thickened with glue were used to create our own version of Vincent Van Gough Starry, Starry Night. Our families were represented when we made Aboriginal artworks inspired by an Aboriginal artist from Northern Queensland, Daphne du Jersey. Please come and look at the beautiful works of art displayed around our classrooms.

This term, Prep students have been painting, sculpting, gluing and sketching artworks of people. This week, as a culmination of this Art topic we to visited the National Portrait Gallery at Old Parliament House. We had the chance to look at a number of different portraits by a variety of artists. We all enjoyed looking at the portrait of James Morrison and finding the clues about what he did as a job hidden in the painting. We also listened to some of his jazz music while we were examining his portrait. The sculpture made from the death mask of Ned Kelly held great fascination for all and the beautiful dress belonging to Princess Mary was much admired. As we looked at each portrait we discussed who the subject was and why their portrait was in the gallery. Among others, we looked at portraits of a doctor, actor, musician, princess, artist and bushranger. Each student had their favourite portrait and their reasons for choosing that portrait were varied and provoked much discussion on our return to the classroom.

As part of our Integrated Studies unit this term - Who’s Who in the School; Prep students have been interviewing different members of staff to find out what they do at our school. This week we were very excited to walk up to the Senior School Campus to interview School Principal, Ms Susan Just.

All 60 Prep students squeezed into Ms Just’s office to hear about her job and were amazed at how early she comes to school and to hear that some nights she does not go home until after they are all in bed! We had the opportunity to explore the Senior School and saw some of the students working hard in the Library and practising their soccer skills on the oval.

After we had interviewed Ms Just, we walked up to the School Chapel and interviewed School Chaplain, Father Paul Harris. It was interesting to hear that Father Paul has lots of different parts to his job and that he sometimes has to work on the weekends as well as during the week. We were very happy to find out that Father Paul’s favourite part of his job was speaking to the students.

During this term Prep are focusing on portraits as their art topic. With this topic we will be looking at people and exploring creating artworks using a variety of different materials. Some of the artworks we have been looking at include several artists and establishments like Fiona MacDonald, Picasso and the National Portrait Gallery.  Art is done each week and started off with the students painting a self portrait. The following art lesson saw students constructing collage portraits, model figures and cartoon characters. As part of Prep’s study of portraits they will be visiting the National Portrait Gallery in week 9.

With a mix of excitement and trepidation our 60 new Prep students began their Junior School journey this week.

Despite the rainy beginning the students were all eager to meet the teachers and new classmates. During this week the students have learnt the location of many important places in the School. Clements Hall, where assembly takes place, the Undercroft, where we eat our recess, the Library, playground and, very importantly, the toilets.

As part of the quality start program we have undertaken a variety of games and activities designed to help us get to know each other. We have also begun to decorate our classroom with a range of masterpieces.

Students are looking forward to beginning their full day program and are keen to meet specialist teachers.
