From the Head of Senior School

The front page headline last Saturday; “Girls Grammar our top-performing school,” was referring to the recent very positive NAPLAN literacy and numeracy results.

These results reflect a culture at CGGS where high quality education is valued and where students, teachers and parents work together in a very supportive environment. It must be noted however that any school is far more than one type of assessment instrument. The values espoused in a school, community service undertaken, effective pastoral care structures, quality teaching and learning, a truly inclusive community, supportive parents and hospitable environment are some of the factors that combine to equip students to engage as fully as they can in society throughout their later lives.

104 rowers gave their all at the Head of the River Regatta held at the Olympic Regatta Centre in Penrith last Sunday. Over the course of the day we won a number of events and performed strongly in every event in which we participated. A real feature of the day was the wonderful organisation and hospitality provided by the parents. The bravery and dare I say extraordinary dexterity of the parents responsible for the very prominent supporter banner, was also noteworthy! Dafydd Gwynn-Jones and the coaching staff are of the highest quality and have developed a very warm and welcoming culture as well providing excellent coaching. Congratulations also to the futsal and indoor hockey teams on their successes last week.

The weekly full school assemblies always have a diversity of reports presented by students. Often I think how wonderful it would be for parents and guardians to see their daughters in this light. Creative, intelligent, informative and often humourous, the student contributions to the assemblies are impressive. At the Assembly this week Rita Firth (Year 12) and Claire Paton’s (Year 12) beautiful interpretation of Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi was amazing.

The House Swimming Carnival will held at the AIS pool on 25 March. If any parents are available to assist with the BBQs on the day or the collection of money I would really appreciate your help. We need 4-6 parent volunteers. If you can help please contact Millie Paton here at CGGS, email millie.paton@cggs.act.edu.au or 6202 6405.

From the School Chaplain

Palm Sunday is fast approaching.

We have again booked the donkeys for our 9.30am Family and Friends Service on the Sunday 29 March. Last year we had a station's service where we moved about the Chapel and explored different parts of the Story. We are looking at doing a modified version of this again this year but with slightly more structure. Hope to see you there.
