Term 3 is the longest and coldest term in the year. The feeling of being so close to the end yet so far from actually graduating takes a toll upon the morale of Year 12s as we drag ourselves out of the warmth of the Senior Common Room at the end of every lunchtime and into the cold world of assessments, due dates, and ATARs.
This month, the Senior Council’s theme is August Appreciation. Amidst all the stress, sniffly noses, and late nights studying, we’re asking Senior School students to take a moment every day to say thank you to the people in our lives and within our school community who help make our days brighter. We’ve planned events and activities throughout the month to say ‘Thanks!’ to our teachers, our friends, and all the support and operational staff at the School.
As we countdown the days until we graduate and as the exciting yet daunting reality of moving out of home begins to set in, the Year 12 cohort has started to realise the importance of time spent with our families. So today, this thank you is to all our Mums, our Dads, and our families.
Thank you for being our biggest supporters. You stand on the sidelines of our games in the freezing cold, you bring us cups of tea while we study, you listen to all our worries and never-ending complaints. You show your love to us in big ways and small ways... and often quite embarrassing ways. Thank you for all the sacrifices you have made for us and all the times you have put our needs before your own.
We love you and appreciate all that you do for us, even though we don’t always know how to express it. Your ability to cope with the pressures of life, work, relationships and all kinds of other obstacles amazes us. When we were little, we thought you were superheroes, but now as we begin to understand the complexities of life beyond school, we know you are superheroes.
When you go into a bookstore, you can find whole shelves lined with books on parenting; advice from experts on how to teach your child to become the best they can be. But the best lessons we’ve learnt from our families aren’t ones that can be read from a book. You’ve taught us to be confident, to stand tall and be proud of who we are. It is your thoughtfulness, your kindness and most importantly, your love, that has shaped us into the women we are today.
This message is not just for our Mums and Dads, it’s for all the grandparents, siblings, aunties, uncles, and all the friends who have become part of our families. Thank you for always supporting and encouraging us to become the best version of ourselves. This August is all about showing our appreciation to important people in our lives, but we want you to know how much we appreciate you every single day.
Lots of love,
