Year 7 students, Maggie Burdon and Chloe Douglas-Byrne competed at the recent NSW Swimming State Championships at Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre. Chloe, who competed in seven events, and Maggie, who competed in six, both made final placings in their pet events: Chloe 4th in 50 freestyle and 7th in 50 butterfly; Maggie 8th in 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle.
Both girls train under Les Barklay at the CGGS pool in the mornings and achieved personal best times in all their events. They also achieved finals placings at the NSW Swimming Country Championships at Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre in February, with Chloe winning a bronze medal in the 12 years 100 freestyle.
Lucy Piva and Charlotte Royal (both in Year 8) have qualified to swim at the Australian Age National Swimming Championships in Adelaide from the 15-22 April. Lucy trains up to six times a week having come to the sport after an ACL injury ended her netball career. Charlotte, who’s also in the pool most days of the week says maintaining the balance between sport and school work isn’t too hard. “Swimmers have a good work ethic and are pretty organised,” said Charlotte. We wish them the best of luck in Adelaide.
And plenty of swimming success in the Junior School too! Congratulations to the following girls who have qualified to be part of the South Weston Swimming Team competing at the ACT Swimming Championships on Monday, 6 May: Claire Bridley, Annaliese Bush, Xuanwei Chen, Elizabeth Denney, Lily Huang, Nina Konstantinou, Amelie Martin, Alyse O’Brien, Marina Tzanetos, Katelyn Wall and Miranda Worswick.
Junior School students Maddie Miller (Year 5), Amelia Naughton (Year 5), Claudia Ryall (Year 3) & Olivia Ryall (Year 5) have all been selected to represent ACT in U12 basketball. Congratulations girls!
Adding to a great season on the water, Zara Collisson (Year 12) finished 2nd in the World Rowing Indoor Sprint Erg Competition where she competed against 167 female athletes across the world. An incredible effort, congratulations Zara.
Congratulations to Kacy Bell (Year 12) is representing ACT in the U19s Netball team competing in the National Championships in Brisbane during the holidays.
Chloe Hope (Year 12) and Alex Gorddard (Year 11) have been selected to represent ACT at the National Championships for Basketball in Townsville being held 11-21 April. Good luck to both girls!
Bianca Barrass-Borzatti (Year 12) and Gemma Hudson (Year 11) have been chosen as part of a ten-student team to represent Australia in the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships in Toronto this month. Well done girls what a fantastic achievement!

Julia Romano (Year 9) attended the NCA National Championships in Dallas earlier this year with her Cheerleaders group ‘Sirens’. This competition is the world’s largest all-star cheerleading competition. Overall they placed 14th with a perfect routine (zero deductions). Julia also represented the ACT and Australia at the 2017 International Cheerleading Championships in Hawaii.
The following students have been selected in the ACT Dragon Boating team: Maddie Bloom (Year 11), Georgia Braggett (Year 12), Grace Carey (Year 12), Rachel Hardy (Year 12), Sophie McGlade (Year 12 – selected as a sweep) and Lukah Tuan (Year 12). This is a great testament to all six girls and the hard work and dedication they are putting into Dragon Boating. Good luck in the Australian Dragon Boat Championships (AusChamps) being held in Canberra over Easter!
Two Year 10 students will be competing in Netball at the NSW Academy Games in Maitland from 12-14 April. Congratulations to Tatyana Ludwig (playing in the South East Sports Academy squad) and Abigail Worswick (playing in the ACT Develop a Diamond Academy (DADA) squad).
Genevieve Gilarski (Year 12) has been invited to represent CGGS at the 2019 National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) being held on the USA later this year.
