Last weekend, four teams from the Junior School participated in the 2017 regional finals of Tournament of Minds (TOM). All teams performed superbly on the day and three teams were awarded Honours. They now proceed to the next level of the Tournament – the Territory Finals on Sunday, 17 September.
Tournament of Minds is an exciting, national problem solving program for teams of seven students from a variety of year levels. Students solve open-ended challenges (a Long Term and a Spontaneous Challenge) from one of the following disciplines:
- Language Literature
- Engineering Maths
- Social Sciences
- Science Technology
Teams are required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks in order to explore ideas and produce their best possible solution to a given problem. Students develop original ways to communicate this response as they work within a pre-determined set of challenge criteria. On Tournament day, students present their ideas within ten minutes to a panel of judges and an audience. They also solve a four-minute Spontaneous Challenge that requires them to engage in a rapid interchange of ideas, develop their ability to think critically and creatively, and demonstrate well developed group cooperation skills.
