Equipping girls with the skills to lead

Equipping our students to lead now and in the future is a large part of what we do at Canberra Girls Grammar School. In the Junior School opportunities exist for our students to begin their leadership journey from the very first year of formal schooling but these opportunities culminate in Year 6 when we expect all of our girls to step up and demonstrate the skills, attitudes and dispositions of a leader.

In the wide range of leadership opportunities available to Year 6 students, no roles are more prestigious or demanding than that of Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, so in recognition of the level of commitment and maturity necessary to fulfil the requirements of these positions a rigorous selection process is employed. This process arguably begins long before Term 4 when letters of application by Year 5 students are due and speeches are made, as voting by the Year 5 cohort and Junior School staff will reflect the behaviour of each applicant over time.

We know that the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate - that has the Learner Profile at its core - and our Signature Program, Girls with Grit, provide rich and diverse opportunities for each Year 5 girl to explore her strengths and challenges and to demonstrate and refine her leadership capabilities. We also teach and model leadership emphasising that leadership is about service, communication, relationships and trust.

I wish our Year 5 applicants for the 2020 Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl roles well and look forward to interviewing those who make it to the final round of the process. Regardless of the outcome, the students who put themselves forward are to be congratulated for standing up and taking a risk.

The successful candidates will have large shoes to fill but knowing our Year 5 girls I am sure they are up to the challenge and as our current Head Girl, Kate Corcoran, told me: “The role of Head Girl is demanding but it is also a lot of fun. I am proud to be Head Girl.”
