Peer Mediation Program

The aim of the Peer Mediation program is to encourage the development of pastoral care and leadership skills in our Year 6 student body.

At the end of Year 5 students nominate themselves to undertake peer mediation training under the guidance of our school counsellor, Ms. Paula Morelli. After participating in a short training program, designed to enhance the development and use of mediation techniques, as well as an apprenticeship period, these students commence the following year as Year 6 peer mediators.

The primary responsibilities of a peer mediator is to interact with Junior Primary students experiencing friendship issues in the playground under the supervision of a teacher at all times. Peer mediators work in pairs and are flexibly timetabled on a recess or lunch duty every day. At the end of each playground session peer mediators have the opportunity to debrief with one of the teachers monitoring the program. Regular informal meetings with all peer mediators and the Safe School Committee occur to ensure that any issues encountered are dealt with promptly and effectively.
