About the ELC
Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS) Early Learning Centre (ELC) provides our youngest students with a welcoming, nurturing and safe environment, which is designed to meet their needs and provide them with time, space and opportunities to explore the world and discover their unique place within it.
Located on the Junior School campus, the ELC is a purpose built facility, with design inspiration coming from the Reggio Emilia philosophy. Natural light fills the spacious rooms and the central Piazza is an inviting space where families, children and the ELC community come together. The natural curiosity and creativity of children is evident throughout the ELC, with artwork, photographs and shared learning taking pride of place around the centre.
The ELC is co-educational and caters for children from three to five years of age, in two separate year levels. Reception is our first entry year, offering an educational program for children who are three to four years of age. To be eligible for entry, children must turn three by 31 January in the year in which they commence Reception, and must be fully toilet trained. The Reception program is offered in full-time and part-time mode. There are 22 places for children to attend full-time (five days a week) and 22 places for children to attend part-time (two days per week, set as Thursday and Friday).
Pre-Prep is the second year offered in the ELC, providing an educational program for children who are four to five years old. To be eligible for entry, children must turn four by 30 April in the year in which they commence Pre-Prep, and must be fully toilet trained. The Pre-Prep program is offered in full-time and part-time mode. There are 44 places for children to attend full-time (five days a week) and 22 places for children to attend part-time (three days per week, set as Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday).
The educational programs for the Reception and Pre-Prep classes operate from 9.00am to 3.00pm during school terms. A limited number of Before School Care and After School Care places are available, providing care from 8.15am-9.00am and 3.00pm-5.45pm. During school holidays, the ELC offers a Holiday Program which operates from 8.15am-5.45pm. The ELC closes for a period of four weeks from mid-December until mid-January.
CGGS believes inherently in the value of high quality early childhood education. Accordingly, the ELC classes are staffed with individuals possessing specialist early childhood qualifications. Each class in the ELC has a University trained early childhood teacher and Level 4 co-educator. These staff members provide a sense of consistency and continuity of learning for the students in their class, and this stable staffing facilitates strong, positive relationships to be formed.
In 2014, the ELC became the first centre in the ACT, and one of a select few nationally, to be awarded an Excellent rating by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority. The Excellent rating is the highest rating an education and care service can achieve under the National Quality Framework.
Three years later, the ELC received the Excellent rating from ACECQA for the second time. Only 71 services (out of Australia’s approximately 15,500 services) have been rated as Excellent since the National Quality Standard commenced in 2012.
